4 ENGINEER SUPPORT REGIMENT
4 Engineer Support Regiment (4 ESR) is the Army's Centre of Excellence in armoured engineer training. 4 ESR was activated on December 10, 1992 at CTC Gagetown upon the amalgamation of 22 Field Squadron (CTC Gagetown) and 4 Combat Engineer Regiment (CFB Lahr). 4 ESR has an established strength of 230 all ranks, and currently consists of three squadrons:
•45 Engineer Heavy Equipment Squadron;
•46 Resources Squadron; and
•48 Administration Squadron.
•horizontal and vertical construction;
•reinforcement of the close support engineer units in the provision of mobility, counter-mobility and survivability to the manoeuvre forces during operations.
As the only regular force engineer unit in Land Force Atlantic Area, 4 ESR forms the core of the Atlantic Engineer Regiment when 45 Field Engineer Squadron from Sydney, N.S., and 56 Field Engineer Squadron from St John's are brought under operation control for total force training in the Atlantic Training Brigade.
Additionally, 4 ESR provides engineer support to the CTC with common tasks being: •demolition and mine warfare training;
•provision of battlefield explosive simulation;
•equipment and firepower demonstrations;
•provision of engineer advice; and, support to CTC courses.
Opposed water crossings and deliberate defensive operations are examples of 4 ESR's reinforcement to the Combat Engineer Regiments. The Regiment annually conducts two armoured engineer operator courses: armoured troop training and a maintenance course.
In the recent past, 4 ESR has deployed troops and individuals to Alert and UN operations in Croatia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Haiti. Always operationally focussed, 4 ESR exemplifies the engineer motto of UBIQUE.
4 ESR houses its headquarters in Building D-10, with the remainder of the Regiment accommodated in buildings B-19, B-20, C-8 and H-7. 4 ESR also maintains an engineer storage area at Swan Lake in Area 2.
