NATO ASI '99
ADVANCED STUDY INSTITUTE
MICROWAVE SUPERCONDUCTIVITY
29 August - 10 September 1999
Millau, FRANCE
ASI is open to qualified participants from any country. Financial awards are available to some residents of NATO and selected Eastern European Countries.
This NATO ASI will cover in detail (1) the fundamental aspects of microwave properties of superconductors, (2) the fabrication and measurement of superconducting devices and circuits which operate at microwave frequencies, and (3) the technological issues and market potential of all current and emerging microwave applications of superconductivity, regardles of whether these applications involve the older liquid-helium-based metallic materials, the newer liquid-nitrogen-based ceramic materials, or hybrid cryoelectronic systems that incorporate both superconducting and non-superconducting components crucial to system operation. This will include, but is not limited to, filters for wireless communications systems, RF SQUID applications, space applications, NMR and MRI coils, and accelerator cavities - especially in free electron lasers. Cryogenic support systems also will be considered within the context of offering a complete, user-friendly system package.
NATO funds will be available to support the room and board of students and post-docs from NATO and selected eastern European countries, with the possibility of limited partial travel support, with somewhat greater travel support for US applicants through NSF grants. All successful applicants must provide a $200 nonrefundable fee via other financial sources. For those who wish to attend without NATO support, the cost for room and full board (for someone sharing a double room) will be about FF 4, 800 (or approximately $890) for 12 complete days. For those wising to have a single room, the supplemental charge will be FF 138 (about $25) per night. Full board includes breakfast, refreshment breaks, and complete lunch and dinner with wine and beverage, except for box lunches on days there are group excursions.
The venue is the 3-star International Hotel in Millau. Millau is located in a region of considerable natural beauty, with high plateaus ("causses" in French), steep gorges (e.g., the "Gorges du Tarn") and caves (e.g., we shall visit one where Roquefort cheese is made and taste some cheese). Our excursions will sample these various natural sites, as well as the medieval walled city of La Couvertoirade, and there will be an optional Sunday excursion to Nimes and other places in nearby Provence. Millau itself is a charming town. It is a center for the manufacture of leather goods, gloves in particular, and one can visit a local museum where the history of this industry is featured.
DEADLINE WAS February 1, 1999, but applications still will be accepted until all available slots have been filled. ONLY ABOUT 10 ARE AVAILABLE AS OF 2 FEB
