This article tied for third prize in the 1998 Army Magazine essay contest.

Submitted for the journal's 1999-2000 essay contest on military innovation, the essay did not place in the top three but was selected to appear with the winning entries. Some supporting maps and a graphic not included in the published version are located here. In my own defense, the editors selected the term "paradigm" for a heading. I vowed long ago never to use it... Two readers responded in the following issue with letters. JFQ published my response. The article was included in the Army War College Library's "Periodical Articles for Current Awareness" published 1 SEP 2001 (the article was actually published in summer 2001) and in "Jointness: A Selected Bibliography (Compiled by Virginia C. Shope, U.S. Army War College Library, Carlisle Barracks, PA, November 2002). The article was required reading in the Land Power section of the Geostrategy course at National Defense University (Summer 2002), the Defense Statecraft course at the University of Kentucky for the Fall 2003 term, was on the reading list of the "Roles and Missions of the Armed Forces" course at George Washington University (Spring 2004), and listed on "Integration of Joint Operations" Research Seminar Topic at the Air Command and Staff College.

Two articles purchased by the United States Naval Institute Proceedings have not been published yet (and one was purchased several years ago so I doubt it will see the printed page). One addressed Army-Marine Corps joint operations and one examined the implications of network-centric warfare for the Navy.

In addition, since July 2002, I have maintained a blog site, "The Dignified Rant", a running commentary on the war, foreign policy, defense issues, and other topics. 1
