The P-51h was the final major production model. The redesign of this model incorporated FW-190D or spitfire MK22. These designs were to make the mustang a more light weight aircraft. The design was to make the Mustang a long range escort in the pacific. The P-51 h model was built to be 10% stronger than before to allow more G force in combat manuevers. Structurally nothing was the same as the earlier models.
With the new designs and added strength the Mustang, which was more maneuverable than most other fighters it faced, could now make even tighter turns. For better visibility the canopy was raised. Alterations of the ailerons were made to improve the roll rate, redesigned the wing for greater lift and less drag. There were also improvements to the radiator fairing contours. The tail being redesigned so it would provide more strength and surface area. Another change which is easily visible is the reduction of size of the vertical stabilizer fin fillet.Speed of the mustang was increased by streamlining and also improving stability.
A new 2000 hp engine version of the Packard-Merlin which incorporated water injection. These changes brought about the finest fighter plane of the Second World War. 1945 saw the incorporation into air battle of the P-51 h towards the end of the war. It now boasted a speed of 486 mph at 30,000 ft with the best climb rate of 5,350 ft per minute with a ceiling of 41,600 ft.
