Spirit came into my life on May 27th 2005, the day my beautiful Bram passed away. I first heard about Spirit earlier in the year, one of two special neds German Shepherds in California. Spirit was a stray in Bakersfield shelter and was pulled by a rescuer and taken to the Ruby Refuge in Los Angeles.
So what is so special about Spirit? Simply put she has femurs and a pelvis but no acetabulum (sockets) as can be seen on the x-ray below. Her hips are permanently craniodorsally subluxated:
Spirit walks with her legs fully extended. An orthopedic assessment shows that her joints are not fused, but how much normal movement she can get is open for debate. Don't let the legs fool you though - Spirit is well named. She is a true wild child, on the go all the time and more than able to run round the yard at the same pace as Drift (as evidenced in the video clip below):
