The term "Lion Dog" is sometimes used to describe both the Shih Tzu and the Pekingese. It is know that the Shih Tzu was perfected in China, where they were prized by the nobles. Their life was of great luxury, being allowed to sit on Satin Pillows and had a courtyards of marble to run in for exercise.
It is believed that they were descendants of the Tibetan Terrier, and they were admired for their short face. The crossing of the batamized Tibetan breeds and Chinese miniatures, that were native to the area helped create the Shih Tzu we know today.
The Shih Tzu was first brought to the United States in 1930, and the American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1938, and they then received their own separate breed for showing in 1969.
All dogs have a job to do, but the Shih Tzu does not hunt, track, attack, pull, or any other working job, as they were developed for the sole purpose of giving love.
They are described as being almost human with their response to affection and they are very generous with their love. The Shih Tzu has a carefree big dog attitude, almost to the point of being scary to their owners.
Shih Tzu's might bark to let you know that someone is at the door, but once the person is admitted into the home, they will become affectionate with the visitors.
Shih Tzu's come in every color, some part white with other colors on them are called parti, some are all one color this is referred to as solids.
The Shih Tzu is a house pet only, and they are happy almost any where from a high rise apartment to the middle of a country acreage.
Shih Tzu's like to go for walks,
but when the owner is unable to go they will run around the house, and
they also love to travel in a car with their owners.
Shih Tzu's are and intelligent breed, who can be taught
many tricks, to obedience, and will take to being spoiled brat.
Shih Tzu's are not difficult to feed but do require a diet that will maintain their coat and skin in good health. The Shih Tzu's do require regular grooming, as they need to be brushed and combed to remove mats and tangles, to be followed by a weekly bath. The Shih Tzu likes to have their face washed every day.
The Shih Tzu is a very sturdy, lively, toy dog with a double coat. Their arrogant carriage with head held high and their tail curved over the back. The Shih Tzu is a toy breed is nine (9) to ten and a half (10 1/2) inches tall, and never less than eight (8) inches tall nor more than eleven (11) inches in height. Their body is a little longer than they are tall, and when mature they will weigh from nine (9) to sixteen (16) pounds.
The Shih Tzu, no matter what size, is always compact, solid, carries good weight, and substance. The gait should be straight and allowed to move at its natural speed, and they should have a smooth, flowing movement. Their front reach should be good with their rear drive equally as strong, and the top line should be level.

MINIATURE SCHNAUZER

The origin of the Schnauzer was in Germany, and it is reported that there are pictures of the Schnauzer dating back to the fifteenth century.
It is believed that today's schnauzer was derived from the crossing the black poodle, wolf gray spitz, and the Old German Pinscher dogs, and originally the schnauzer was a black and tan or fawn colored dog.
The Schnauzer is stocky built, has a harsh, wiry coat with wiry whiskers. Their primary colors today is the salt and pepper this is a mixing of the light and dark banded hairs, and today we can get solid blacks, black and tan, and solid whites, and occasionally a silver.
To begin with the Schnauzer was a yard and stable dog, and a rodent eradicator, but due to the size the schnauzer is unable to go to ground after small animals.
It is believed that they are wholly in relationship in blood and origin as the British terrier. The temperament is that of a terrier and is classed as a terrier in the United States, but in Germany and England they are not considered terriers.
To get the miniature size the medium Schnauzer was used to cross into the Affenpinschers, and this is a small German breed that is black in color. The crossing of the two breeds is not register able, but due to the cross their temperament has mellowed and they are not as aggressive as their predecessors.
Records show that they were showed in the show ring as early as 1899.
The Miniature Schnauzer is hardy, active, intelligent, likes children, and are good ratters. The Miniature Schnauzer is happy in an apartment or out in the country. The Miniature Schnauzer is not a fighter but will stand up for himself if necessary, and they do not tend to wander from home.
The Miniature Schnauzer should be twelve (12) inches tall for females and the males should be a little bit taller-up to fourteen (14) inches. They have not established a weight standard, but rule of thumb says that a female should weigh twelve (12) pounds and a male should be around fifteen (15) pounds. Heavy boned Miniature Schnauzers will increase their weight faster, and the finer boned, leggy dogs tend to be lighter in weight but are less desirable for the show
Toady's Miniature Schnauzers should be almost square in shape. The chest should be moderately broad, a straight, strong back, with well muscled things, and the head should be of good length. The coat color is salt and pepper, black and silver, solid black, and now there are even some white Miniature Schnauzers, as well as silver. The coat is coarse, and fairly thick. The ears are cropped in the United States, but in England they do not tamper with the ears. American Kennel Club as well as the other dog registries does recognize both cropped and uncropped in the show ring. Their tails are docked and should not be longer than one (1) inch in length.
The Miniature Schnauzer requires regular grooming, and it takes a skilled groomer to give the proper cut on the Schnauzer.
Miniature Schnauzers are considered to be one of the elegant breeds of the terriers. The breeds instincts are more that of a doormat than its ancestors, and today not many people use the Miniature Schnauzer for going to ground.
Today the Miniature Schnauzer is considered to be one of the most popular companion dogs as they are very stylish and friendly dogs, and their temperament should never be overly aggressive or extra timid.
