Which makes a better pet? A male or a female?

There is a common misconseption, that females make better pets. Why? Maybe people think the maternal instinct of a female is what gives the girls an edge. Actually, the whole idea of one sex making a better companion than the other sex, is an old adage. There is no scientific proof that females make better pets than males. It's like saying that women are better cooks. If that is true, then why are most chefs men? Who knows! What matters is the a person (male or female) got the training and the knowledge they needed to become a chef. The same is true with dogs. When you bring a puppy (male or female) into your home, and you train it, and love it, and care for it, you are going to reap the positive results of that effort regardless of the sex of the dog. So, if you cuddle-up with your dog, your dog is going to learn to cuddle-up with you. The more you care, and show affection for your puppy, the more he/she is going to be able to know what kinds of love and affection you like in return.
Another reason people seem to prefer females,is they do not "hump" people's legs, or "mark" in the house like males do. Some people like males better because you don't have to worry about heat cycles and the suitors that come with it (not to mention the unwanted litters). Well, that is where spaying and neutering makes all things equal. If you spay or neuter your pet, all these worries that keep you up nights will vanish (I guarantee it!). Not to mention, spaying and neutering helps prevent your dog from contracting reproductive organ cancers. That is why most good breeders require the dogs they sell as pets to be spayed or neutered (along with about 5 other good reasons). Oh, one other myth I would like to squash is...letting your girl have a litter before you spay her doesn't make her sweeter. It just makes her a mom, and you maid. You're the one who will have to clean up after those little poop factories for 8 weeks. And, what if it takes you 4 months to sell all her puppies? Sound like fun? NOT!
The most important thing to remember when choosing a puppy as a pet, is not the sex, or the color...but the personality. After all, that is what you LIVE with. Not that color isn't important. It just shouldn't be the only thing you base your choice of a dog on. Sex can be important too. Yes, I just told you it didn't matter in the paragraphs above, but sometimes it DOES matter. I'll give you an example. A woman called asking for a female puppy. I thought, "Here we go again!". The reason she HAD to have a female is that she grew and cultivated specialty roses in her yard. A female was a must because, girls squat when they potty and boys...well, you get the picture! For this woman, a male just didn't make sense for her life-style.
So, as you see, it really doesn't matter which you choose; male or female (unless you grow roses). The more you care for your dog, the better companion he will be with you. If you spay or neuter your pet, it really does take all the worry out of which to choose.
