Keeping your dog

COOL!!

Here are a list of things you can do at shows, and at home, to keep your best friend nice and cool during the dog days of summer!

    At Home:
  • Keep lots of water out for them to drink at all times.
  • Make sure they always have shade from the sun.
  • Put a tray of ice cubes in their water for them to munch on.
  • Buy a baby wading pool and fill it with water for them to splash in.
  • If at all possible, keep them inside or in a cool place in the hotest hours of the day.
  • Give them a few fans turned up on high!
  • You can purchase special doggie "water beds" that you can freeze, then put out for them to lay on.

    At Shows:
  • Always provide them with cold water to drink.
  • Keep a cooler of ice and water with you at all times.
  • Purchase a bandana that chemically stays cool so you can wrap it around their neck.
  • Get a cooling blanket to drap over them.
  • Drap a white or light-colored sheet over their crate, or car, to keep out the sun.
  • Keep a spray bottle full of water with you to spritz them down with. (Even though your dog may be judged wet, it is better than him dying of heat stroke!)
  • If they become too hot, cool them down as soon as possible by:
    • Draping them with cold, wet sheets.
    • If male, holding cold water or buffered ice to their testicles.
    • Holding cold water or buffered ice to their bellies and armpits.
Get to a vet as soon as possible!!
  • Did I mention having lots of water?
The safety of your pet should always come before your own comfort, but don't neglect your safety either. Be sure to drink lots of water (yes, water, not soda-pop!) and recognise when you are getting too tired and hot. No one wants to remember a show by the miserable heat!!
