THE ADVENTURES OF SAMMIE AND VICKIE

Whiz, bang, slam, zip--two streaks of lightning fly by at MACH I speed. Running past the guest room, flying through the hall to the bedroom, jumping onto the bed, leaping off the bed, whizzing through the living room, bouncing onto the back of the sofa, diving off the sofa, careening through the kitchen, screeching to a halt just long enough for a sip of water, zipping to the laundry, (stop-action long enough to visit the litter box), and chasing each other back to the kitchen when they hear the cupboard door open. In my softest voice, I say, "Cookie," and everything comes to a halt. Suddenly, there is peace, and the two little rascals sit waiting patiently for their treat, which they devour with relish. Then, they are off again. That's what it's like when you have two healthy TFTs around the house.

Toy Fox Terriers are faithful, funny, friendly, and feisty. They are also the bravest inhabitants in all of dogdom. They are pets, pals, and companions, as well as hunters, competitors, and aides. They have no idea how small they are and will challenge any intruder--animal, vegetable, or mineral--regardless of size, and they will sound the alarm long before the intruder is heard by human ears, which is why they are such good watch dogs.

Those of us who own TFTs consider ourselves lucky to have found these tiny canine bravehearts. The return in unconditional love is worth their weight in gold. Where else can anyone get such pure, unadulterated hero-worship in such a tiny package? Obviously, I am biased, but it is a sign of a TFT owner--we are partial to, and proud of, the breed. Our two TFTs are called Vickie and Sammie. Find out about these two bravehearts by clicking on their names.

Vickie and Sammie have two totally different personalities; one is calm and sedate, the other is explosive and playful. Where one will sleep much of the time away, the other will explore and examine everything three times over. Sometimes Vickie ignores Sammie, walking away from her if she is to rambunctious. Other times, Vickie will seek out Sammie to play hide and seek. They are so much fun to watch, good companions, and easy travellers. Since my two are litter box trained, and are so small, no hotel or motel has ever refused us a room. Indeed, they always invite pleasant comments from anyone we meet.

On a serious note, to know what makes a fine TFT pup, for show or for a pet, just consult the United Kennel Club Brochure. It is important to purchase through a reputable breeder, so that you will know the ancestry of the pup, and know that both mother and pup have received proper medical care. Moreover, you will be able to view the pup in the early weeks, if you so desire, and make your selection on the basis of what you have seen. There are many reputable breeders throughout the United States and Canada. Just review the Breeder's List for your area, as shown in the magazine, Bloodlines, or go to the referral list on the American Toy Fox Terrier Club web site. You can also see photographs of carefully bred pups on many TFT sites.
