The tremendous overpopulation of unwanted pets is a situation that I try to help in my own small way. Therefore, I will only suggest two ways in which to find a Keeshond; through Reputable Breeders and Rescue.

Kody, Rescued 4/29/97

A reputable breeder is a person who selectively breeds dogs to better the breed. A reputable breeder will have both the sire and dam tested for genetic problems such as hip dysplasia or vision problems, as an example. The breeder will have the results of these tests and the sire and dam on the premisis for you to see. This breeder will sell all puppies on contract. The contract will state that all pet quality puppies must be spayed or neutered, and that if you can not keep the dog, you must return it to the breeder. They will also check potential homes and references of new owners. A reputable breeder has the best interest of the dogs in mind at all times.

To find a reputable breeder go to the The American Keeshond Society

A rescued Keeshond is taken in by volunteers all across the United States from shelters and families who no longer wanted them. All rescued Keeshonden are checked by a veterinarian, inoculated and tested for heart worm; spayed or neutered before placing in a new home; temperament checked with people, children, dogs, and other pets. A rescue volunteer will work with potential adoptive families to find the best placements. A rescued Keeshond is normally a year or older and already past the housebreaking and puppy chewing stage. This is not to say that there are no puppies available. Unfortunately there are puppies available from time to time.
