Life with a Keeshond

Do you like hair everywhere? On your clothes, on your furniture, in little fur balls in the corners? If not, then don't get a Kees.

It's not really that bad, but it could be. What attracts most people to a Keeshond is their beautiful luxurious fluffy coat. As with most dogs, a Keeshond will shed. If you are committed to grooming a Kees on a weekly basis you shouldn't have any problems. I brush my Kees once a week, and thoroughly brush and trim monthly. Bathe when smelly.

I said "I WANT a piece of that pie!"

Do you like happy, bouncy, exhuberant, smarter-than-most-humans, little packages of energy? If not, then don't get a Kees.

Happy is an understatement. Just look at one. The tail slowly starts wagging and they smile at you. Keeshonden have markings around their eyes called spectacles. The spectacles and the way their mouths are shaped make them look like they're smiling all the time. Hence the nickname, "Smiling Dutchman". A Kees loves life and loves people. A Kees puts all they have into everything they do. They are the most happy when you give them attention, talk to them, walk in the door, play with them, feed them and groom them. Anything involving their beloved humans. When you get a Kees, you are not getting a pet, you are getting another member of your family.

"MOOOMMM!, Dad stole my seat!"

Would you like no peace and quiet or rest for about a year? If not, then don't get a Kees.

I got Kirby when he was 10 weeks old. Housebreaking was very easy. Kees are very intelligent dogs and learn quickly. I actually trained him rather quickly by accident. We got tired of getting up and opening the door everytime he went to it. About every 10-15 minutes. Kees will do anything to get you to pay attention to them. Since it was summer, we had the back door open with the screen door closed. So we propped open the screen door about 5 inches and Kirby went in and out to do his business every day without any accidents except at night. It was then that we decided to purchase and install a doggie door. It was the best investment we ever made. No more accidents in the house.

They are such fun loving dogs and want to be made an integral part of your family. If you would like to take a break, sit down, relax for awhile, you can forget it if your Kees wants to play. If you ignore them, they'll do something to get your attention. Steal the pillows off the sofa. Take a shoe and parade it right in front of you. They don't sneak things. They bring them right out in front of you so you will pay attention to them by chasing them to get your beloved item back.

After the first seven or eight months, I didn't think I was going to make it through raising him to an adult. I contacted knowledgable Keeshond owners who told me to hang in there it will get better soon. They were right. Kirby settled down nicely at about ten months old. It truly was worth the effort. He turned out to be the nicest, gentle and loving dog I have ever had.

Would you like to be the owner of one of the most loving, loyal, friendliest, funniest companions you could ever dream of owning? If so, get a Kees.

"My present, not your present!" "Aw Mom, did you have to show this one!"
