- Dogs have 42 teeth.
- According to ancient Greek
literature, when Odysseus arrived home after an absence
of 20 years, disguised as a beggar, the only one to
recognize him was his aged dog Argos, who wagged his tail
at his master, and then died.
- German Shepherds bite humans
more than any other breed of dog.
- Each day in the US animal
shelters are forced to destroy 30,000 dogs and cats.
- Every year, $1.5 billion is
spent on pet food. This is four times the amount spent on
baby food.
- The American Society for
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) was formed in

- The bloodhound is the only
animal whose evidence is admissible in an American court
- The dachshund is one of the
oldest dog breeds in history (dating back to ancient
Egypt.) The name comes from one of its earliest uses -
hunting badgers. In German, Dachs means
"badger," Hund is "hound."
- The English Romantic poet
Lord Byron was so devastated upon the death of his
beloved Newfoundland, whose name was Boatswain, that he
had inscribed upon the dog's gravestone the following:
"Beauty without vanity, strength without insolence,
courage without ferocity, and all the virtues of man
without his vices."
- Cats have over one hundred
vocal sounds, while dogs only have about ten.
- The five most common dog names: Duke,
Brandy, Max, Sam, Shadow
- In ancient Rome auburn-haired
puppies were sacrificed to ensure
a plentiful corn crop.
- A dog's nose has over 200
scent receiving cells.
- Boxers were named after their
habit of playing. At the beginning of play with another
dog, a Boxer will stand on his hind legs and bat at his
opponent, appearing to "box" with his front
paws.
- The present canine occupant
in the White House is a chocolate Labrador male born on
August 7th, 1997. He was bred by Linda Renfro and sired
by Quantico Stormy Bear out of Sadies Rainbow Gold.
He is individually registered with the AKC as
Buddy and his owner is listed as William
Jefferson Clinton, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW,
Washington, DC 20500. Buddy is known to enjoy the White
House lawn photo-ops and helicopter rides to and from
Camp David.
- The word "puppy"
comes from the French poupee, meaning "doll."
- The average dog can detect
sounds 250 yard away that most humans couldn't hear at 25
yards.
- When Ulysses, the ancient
Greek hero, returned home disguised as a beggar after his
20-year odyssey, the only creature to recognize him was
his dog.
