A Coat of Many Colors

The Australian Shepherd comes in four different colors, black, red, blue and red merle. These coats can be with or without white markings and copper points. However, according to the breed standard: "On all colors the areas surrounding the ears and eyes are dominated by color other than white. The hairline of a white collar does not exceed the point at the withers." This means that you cannot have white around the eyes, on the ears, or any where else on the body. Although you may see Aussies colored like this, they are known as mismarks because their white is not where is should be. This still make lovely pets, but they cannot be shown in the conformation ring. They can, however, still compete in agility, obedience, and herding trials.

A black dog should be "jet black with no sable undercoat."
