THE KELPIE STORY
By Stephen & Mary Bilson
The Avenpart Stud was first established in 1962 and is founded on Scanlon, Glenville and Karrawarra bloodlines. The Stud is run by Mrs. Mary McCrabb on a large property of 32,000 acres (16,500 Hect.) in western NSW at Wanganella NSW. Some of these paddocks are more than 4,000 acres. This Stud has sold a lot of Kelpies over the period it has been in business and has always taken a professional business-like approach to selling their dogs with a colour brochure and special auctions held on the property.
Avenpart has exported Kelpies to 15 other countries. The first Kelpies to go to Britain came from the Avenpart Stud. They have also featured in the Australian movie, Dusty and in a TV series.
Avenpart Zondo (Glenville Jack X Avenpart Wimpy) was one of the main sires in the Stud. He was a big, black and tan dog that showed some eye in the paddock but was also at home in the yards where he would back and bark. He won the Hamilton Farm Dog Championship in 1984. Probably his most famous offspring is the exceptional Kelpie, Capree Watch, owned by Chris Stapleton. Other Well known Kelpies by Zondo include Capree Shep, Tikara Toby, Capree Zap and Capree Pinky.
Another pup from Avenpart Zondo was Avenpart Chreema owned by Greg Carmody of the Phils Creeks Kelpie Stud. Avenpart Chreema was the sire of Phils Creek Ben and Sam. Today Sam is one of the very best trial winning Kelpies on the Yard & Utility circuit. Other pups by Zondo have been exported to Norway, Sweden, Russia and England. The Stud also has some of his semen stored for later use.
Glenville Smoke - (Glenville Peter X Karrawarra Lottie II) Smoke was a blue and tan Kelpie with a wide cast and bark in the yards or shed. He would also work cattle. Some of his progeny was sent to the USa and New Zealand. In 1978 he won the Improvers Trial at Moulamein. He was 2nd in the 1980 Cootamundra Open. He was 2nd in the 1978 National Kelpie Trial, held at Yanco NSW. He was sold at 10 years of age to the Clebyara Kelpie Stud in 1985. He died in 1989.
Avenpart Dusty II - (Dunwoodie Dan X Avenpart Pepsi) Dusty was a good looking red and tan male and was selected to be the star of the Australia movie, "Dusty" based on the bestselling book by Frank Dalby Davison. Mary has also trained Dingos, Border Collies and other Kelpies for film work. Avenpart Dusty II won the Hillston Novice Trial in 1981. He won the Weethalle Open Trial in 1985 and has placed in a number of others.
Avenpart Chreema - (Avenpart Zondo X Avenpart Zallee) This black and tan bitch was born in 1983 and sold to Greg Carmody of the Phils Creek Kelpie Stud. Although she was an excellent worker in her own right she is best known as the dam of Phils Creek Ben and Phils Creek Sam. Sam is owned by Jim Luce of Coogee Kelpies and has been a big winner in Utility and Yard Dog Trials. Phils Creek Sam won the National Kelpie Utility Trial in 1992. The breeding went on because Phils Creek sam is also the sire of Milburn Basil , Australian & State Yard Champion.
Avenpart Gayleen - (Le Cliff Jock X Avenpart Tarna) Avenpart Gayleen was owned & trained by Stephen & Mary Bilson of the Noonbarra Kelpie Stud.
"We bought Gayleen from Mary Mc Crabb in 1984. We picked her up at Tubbo Utility Trial and also met Des Vincent & Le Cliff Jock, her sire. Gayleen was a Kelpie with an enormous amount of natural ability and had some of the best covering of sheep & footwork that we have seen. She was one of the happiest dogs we have ever owned. She turned out to be a very special link in our whole breeding program. She was an extremely outgoing girl and absolutely loved everyone. By the time she was only a few months old we realised she had more natural ability than any of our other Kelpies. She basically taught herself and us a few things too.
She placed in Arena (3-Sheep), Yard and Utility Trials for us and was the dam of one of our very best sires of the 1980's, Noonbarra Tim. She won fastest time in the 1990 National Kelpie Trial as well as the Bullenbong award for highest scoring Novice dog outside the final. Unfortunately Gayleen was a bit too excitable for trials or she would have won a lot more. Luckily, we were able to breed calm dogs from her and even today we still have her breeding in our lines. - Stephen Bilson
Milburn Lucy - (Phils Creek Sam X Capree Misty II). In a recent Stud Catalogue, Mary Mc Crabb writes of Lucy; A very nice natured black & tan. A brilliant yard bitch, a non-stop backer and free barker. Will work sheep or cattle and will work for anyone. Placed in yard trials but is a little too forceful for competition.
Boanong Tommy - (Karrawarra Jake X Karrawarra Meggs) - This sire at Avenpart is worked by Peter McCrabb and is said to be a wide casting Kelpie with style. He has backing & barking abilility. His sire, Karrawarra Jake has won yard trials.
Cottonwood Matt - (Capree Tex X Cottonwood Polly). Matt is one of the top sires at the Avenpart Stud. According to the Avenpart Stud Catalogue, he has a good cast, heading, balance and walk up to sheep. He is a stylish worker that can handle cattle and uses eye and nosebite. He placed 3rd in the Novice of the National Kelpie Trial in 1994 and was also 2nd at the Dundonell Yard Trials also in 1994.
Tikara Toby - (Avenpart Zondo X Tikari Meg). This sire is leased from Rowan Carter of the Tikari Kelpie Stud. He was placed 3rd at the Dundonell Yard Trial in 1994, 1st in the Caringal Novice Utility and 2nd in the Caringal Improvers section at the same trial. According to the Avenpart Catalogue his progeny are fast, wide casting and have backing and barking ability.
Buckaroo Jane - (Buckaroo King X Wundurra Mandy) This black & tan bitch won the novice at the 1995 Kelpie utility trial. A daughter from her was exported to Norway in 1998. According to the Avenpart Catalogue she will back and bark freely in the yard and is very good on cattle.
