Jim Luce has proven himself to be one of Australia's top Kelpie handlers today. Like many Kelpie handlers today, he has concentrated on the popular Yard and Utility Trials and has won many of the major trials. Most of his success has been as a trainer and handler and often with Kelpies bred by other Studs, in particular the Capree Stud. He has also used dogs from Greg Carmody's Phils Creek Stud and Greg's brothers Stud based on the same line - Karlee.
Jim also runs his own breeding Stud under the name of Coogee. Jim manages three properties in the Goulburn area of NSW so his dogs always get plenty of work in difficult country. Jim Luce often works as a trial judge and is well known for his Kelpie demonstrations.

One of the most outstanding Kelpies he has worked is Phils Creek Sam, who he calls 'Pat'. Phils Creek Sam was bred by Greg Carmody who also owned his brother, Phils Creek Ben. Ben was an another exceptional worker but died just as he was becoming well known.
Phils Creek Sam is one of the most renowned Kelpies today on the Sheepdog Trial circuit. Sam has won a National Kelpie Trial and has placed three times. He won the Australian Yard Dog Championship in 1994. He has also won the State Yard Trial and also a 3 Sheep trial to name a few. He has run a perfect score of 100 in Yard Trials.

Capree Minute is another top Kelpie that is worked by Jim Luce. He won the Australian National Kelpie Sheepdog Trial in 1997. The Kelpie Trial is a Utility trial which has both yard and paddock work involved.

Milburn Darkie was bred by Michael Johnston from Jim Luce's top Kelpie, Phils Creek Sam. Just recently he took out the State Championship Yard Trial held in Canberra. In second place was his brother, Milburn Basil. Both are by Phils Creek Sam.
