THE KELPIE STORY
By Stephen & Mary Bilson
Liscannor was never a big Stud but a number of dogs they produced went on to make up a large part of the breeding lines in Kelpies today. The Stud was started in June 1965 by Pat Mc Cormack. During the 1970-1980 period it was one of the most influential Studs in Australia. Four of the best Kelpies to come from the Liscannor Stud were, Liscannor Kay, Liscannor Pace, Liscannor Stamp and Liscannor Marco. These dogs were all owned by different handlers.
Liscannor Kay -(Rockybar Buff X Liscannor Emma)
Born: 4th March 1979
.Kay was very much an under-rated bitch when she was alive. She was one of those dogs that got the job done without any fuss but didn't call a lot of attention to herself.
Malcolm Peake owned Liscannor Kay and made a big name for himself in the 1980's when he won a number of trials with her including Boorowa Utility Trial, Tubbo Station Trial, Southern Tableland Open Championship and the 1981 National Kelpie Trial with her.
In fact, She won the Australian National Kelpie trial in 1981 with a massive lead of 22 points. She also took out the Novice trial, fastest time and best yard dog. She won the National Kelpie trial again in 1983 and was placed in 1982 and 1984. Liscannor Pace a full brother to her was in 5th place. The best known of Kay's offspring is Barambogie Mack, bred by Malcolm Peake. Mack proved himself again and again as one of this countries best all-round Kelpies.
Kay was a full sister to the famous Liscannor Pace in Tasmania (Le Cliff Stud), Liscannor Fern in New Zealand (top dam at Apiti Stud), and Liscannor Flint (sire at Scoriochre Stud in Victoria). She was also the dam of Barambogie Chance, Malcolm Peake's very good dog.
Don Williams of the Wabba Kelpie Stud said of her 1981 win,"The winner of the trial, Liscannor Kay, is a bitch anyone would be proud to own and is the type of dog, I believe Kelpie breeders should be striving for".
Catherine Austin, Kirkcaldy Kelpies said, " There was no doubt about the top performer, Liscannor Kay, worked by Malcolm Peake. she is a credit to her owner and a spectacle to watch".
In 1982, Liscannor Kay took 4th place in the National Kelpie Trial held at Uralla in NSW. In 1983 she won the National Kelpie Trial a second time with Barambogie Mack and Barambogie Chance (her two famous sons) both on equal 3rd place. Liscannor Stamp, a dog along similar lines was 5th.
In 1984, Liscannor Kay took 4th Place in the National Kelpie Trial held at Hamilton, Victoria. The winner was her son, Barambogie Mack, bred by Malcolm Peake and worked by Steve Weyman. Liscannor Marco, then an old dog was in 7th place. Cotway Queen, the winner of the 1990 National Kelpie Trial was a granddaughter of Liscannor Kay.
Liscannor Fern - ( Rockybar Buff X Liscannor Emma)
Liscannor Fern was a black and tan sister to Pace. She was used in the Apiti stud in New Zealand and was the dam of the two top sires in the Stud, Apiti Chad and Apiti Champ. She was reported as being easy to control, wide casting and strong eyed.
Liscannor Marco -( Wyreema Ted II X Wyvelloe Loo)
Liscannor Marco was owned by Richard Clegg who operated the Bogan Kelpie Stud. He often said that Marco was the best Kelpie he ever owned. Marco won a number of trials and was placed in the National Kelpie Trial. He was known to be a good covering and anticipating dog. He was also good in the yards and shed. In his later years he was worked by Steve Weyman. Under Steve Weyman he was placed 4 times from 6 starts. steve once said that Marco was the strongest kelpie on sheep he had ever seen.
Liscannor Marco and Liscannor Kay produced Barambogie Mack and Barambogie Chance. These dogs were two of the leading utility dogs of the 1980's. They in turn turned out a number of excellent Kelpies including Glenlogie Lucky and Chobi Mindi, winner of the 1988 National Kelpie Trial.
Other well known Liscannor Kelpies were Liscannor Stamp, Liscannor Betty, Liscannor Emma, Liscannor Flint, Liscannor Ross, Liscannor Norm, Liscannor Lucky. Most of these Liscannor Kelpies were sired by the great old dog, Rockybar Buff, who was bought as a pup by Pat McCormack from Les Tarrant's Stud in Queensland.
Liscannor Stamp - (Wyreema Ted II X Wyvelloe Loo) Born: 7th Sept 1977
Liscannor Stamp was bought as a pup by Bruce & Lorna Browning of the Clovaville working Kelpie Stud in Northern NSW. He was held in high regard in that area and was used as a sire and a trial dog for a period. In later life he went to the UD Working Kelpie Stud near Manildra as a Stud Sire. Stamp was a full brother to Liscannor Marco.
Bruce Browning 1983:- "Stamp has been placed in trials including 1st Mudgee Improvers - 83, 5th National Kelpie Trial 83, 2nd Open Uralla 82, 2nd Novice Bonshaw 81. He has sired trial workers, to mind come Clovaville Nick, 6th National, and Clovaville Beau, 2nd National Novice. My best young bitch, Nimble is by Stamp. She topped my score last weekend, Novice & Open at Bonshaw. She won a club Novice at Glencoe."

John Rosten had Liscannor Stamp for a period and thought very highly of him. Liscannor Stamp was later owned by Geoff and Sandy Meller of UD Kelpie Stud. Stamp was a brainy Kelpie and did all types of mustering and droving work. He was especially good at mustering in difficult hilly and timbered country around the New England where the Clovaville Stud is located. He was later trialled in Cattle working trials and performed very well.
Some of his progeny were Clovaville Beau, Clovaville Pride, Clovaville Nigger (Exported to USA.), Clovaville Nimble, UD Jet and Ballydine Runt.
Liscannor Pace - ( Rockybar Buff X Liscannor Emma)
Liscannor Pace was owned by Lance Clifford in Tasmania. This dog became a legend on the trial field winning and placing in over 60 Sheepdog Trials, more than any other Kelpie. He won Arena Trials, Yard Trials and Utility Trials. Lance Clifford went to a lot of expense to trial him a number of times on mainland Australia. He trialled in Western Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and of course Tasmania. Lance was an experienced handler and made sure that Pace got every chance to prove himself.
Liscannor Pace was also an extremely versatile dog. He could work any stock, he backed and barked in the yards but he showed style and eye on three sheep work. He also had a good cast.
He sired a lot of top Kelpies including Le Cliff Pete, Le Cliff Roy, Brigalow Maxine, Le Cliff Fonz, Le Cliff Goldie, Le Cliff Spider (Exported to Canada), Scoriochre Mick, Le Cliff Gentle Ben, as well as the great Le Cliff Jock, owned by Des Vincent.
Le Cliff Jock was a renowned worker, trial dog and sire in the Riverina district of NSW. Jock in turn also produced a number of top dogs including, Liscannor Norm, who won the South Australian State Yard Dog Championship on two separate occasions in 1985 and 1986. Liscannor Norm also took 2nd place in the 1986 Australian National Yard Dog Championship.
Liscannor Pace also sired Le Cliff Gentle Ben, one of the few Kelpies to do well at the Canberra Nationals for many years. He placed 2nd in the Improvers of the National in 1980. He also won the North East Novice Championship. After an accident he went blind when he was just 2 years old.
Liscannor Pace also sired Le Cliff Pete. Le Cliff Pete was the winner of the biggest trial in Tasmania, the State Championships. He was also 3rd in the 1991 National Kelpie Trial. Pete was also 3rd in the 1988 Australian National Yard Dog Championship.
There was also Le Cliff Roy (Liscannor Pace X Le Cliff Jess ) who was 3rd in the 1981 National Kelpie Championship Trial at Mortlake in Victoria. He also won the Novice Tasmanian Championship in 1981. Unfortunatly Le Cliff Roy died of Parvo virus when he was about two years old. He never had a real chance to show what he could do. Le Cliff Roy was also the sire of Abernant Jim, who was the main sire used in the Karrawarra Stud in the 1980's and 1990's.
Tony Parsons of the Karrawarra Stud wrote in his book - The Working Kelpie (1986): " I think he (Pace) is one of the best all round dogs I have seen in late years and one of the only Kelpies I have seen which bears comparision with some of the best dogs of thirty years ago".
Lance Clifford of the Le Cliff Stud : "Pace is easy to control. Strong eyed and very stylish with a careful approach. He has a long, wide cast and also works cattle. He is not afraid to move up to touching his sheep and will not back off".
