THE KELPIE STORY
By Stephen & Mary Bilson
The Scoriochre Kelpie Stud is situated in western Victoria, which is a southern State of Australia. John Gedye and his Scoriochre Stud has sold a lot of Kelpies over a long period of time. Never a Stud for doing a lot of Sheepdog Trials they seem to have concentrated on getting their dogs to the average farmer and promote them as such. One of their best known Kelpies was Scoriochre Gunga.
In one of their brochures they set out their aims:
" We aim to produce the best possible dog for the largest variety of needs - gutsy, game, bold and obedient, single handed workers."
The Stud runs two lines of Kelpies, an A and B line. The A line is a trucking yard line where the dogs have hard force and backing. The second line is a wide working Kelpie for rough country mustering of Merino, Deer and Goats.
The Stud has sold Kelpies into most States of Australia as well as to the USA and Canada.
SCORIOCHRE GUNGA
(Whites Glen X Bullenbong Coonga)
Scioriochre Gunga was named after the legendary Gunga Din. He was probably the best known of all the Scoriochre Kelpies as he performed well in sheepdog trials including wining the South Australian Yard Championship at just 2 years of age.
He was mated to a lot of bitches in the Scoriochre Stud including: Bullenbong May, Sawers Dancer, Scoriochre Gorgie Girl, Scoriochre Ilona, Pendula Kitty, Bullenbong Jetz, O'Brees Jewell, O'Brees Smog, Scoriochre Climp, Dennis's Gem, Scoriochre Cora, Connleys Biddy, Scoriochre Wren II, Bullenbong Leah, and Moonshadow Lil.

SCANLONS FRED
(Scanlons Jock X Scanlons Wren II)
Scanlons Fred was bought by John Gedye as a future sire in his Stud in the 1980's. Mr. Gedye also used his half brother Scanlons Red (Scanlons Joker X Scanlons Wren).

RECORD PRICE FOR LOCAL DOG
Can a sheepdog be worth $2,000 ? Mr.John Gedye of the Scoriochre Kelpie Stud in Dundonnell obviously thinks so. Mr. Gedye recently bought top stud Kelpie, Scanlon's Fred, from Stockman's Kelpie Stud, owned by Bill & Margaret Scott, for that price. Bill Scott described Scanlon's Fred as an exceptional dog, being able to put in outstanding performances in the yard, shed and paddock. Bill said that the dog also has a good bark, and is prepared to run across the backs of both sheep and cattle.
Bill added that although it is quite common for dogs to travel across the backs of sheep, not many are prepared to go across the backs of cattle. The progeny of Scanlons Fred have become much sought after, with one of them, Connleys Smokey, being placed in the South Australian Yard Dog Championships trial last year at the age of ten months, and being placed again this year [1985]. The rest of his progeny have shown tremendous promise, and some may even prove to be better than the sire himself.
Scanlons Fred is a four year old black Kelpie bred by Mr. Frank Scanlon of Quirindi, in New South Wales. Mr. Scanlon, who is now 82, has been breeding Kelpies since he was seven years old., while working his mountainous property in the Liverpool Ranges. Bill is very impressed with the work of Mr. Scanlon, saying that he has made a greater contribution to the Kelpie breed than anyone else. Bill said that, despite his age, Mr. Scanlon still keeps himself very busy working dogs, breaking in horses, and he even built himself a new house at Christmas time as he did not think the old one would see him out.
When buying a dog, Bill looks only at working ability, saying that the size, colour and looks were of secondary importance. He felt that the bloodlines of dogs were very important, as many people wanted dogs to perform specific tasks, and added that breeding was becoming quite scientific with the use of genetics increasing.

LISCANNOR FLINT
Rockybar Buff X Liscannor Emma
Liscannor Flint was used as a sire in the Scoriochre Stud in the 1980's. Carl Carlon, president of the Working Kelpie Council for a number of years and owner of the Ballydine Kelpie Stud bought Liscannor Flint from John Gedye to use him as a sire in his Stud. Unfortunately this dog was stolen from his trailer on the way home from Victoria to NSW directly after purchase and never heard of again.
John Gedye of the Scoriochre kelpie Stud wrote to Stephen & Mary Bilson in 1985:
" Flint was a brother to Pace and Kay etc. but not a litter brother. He was a litter or two younger than 'Pace' and a couple of litters older than 'Kay'. I sold Flint to Carl Carlon, Uralla but Carl lost the dog the day he picked him up. Both Flint and a bitch he had with him were taken from his ute from behind a local hotel and has not been heard of since.
He was a good dog in work and he had proven himself as a good sire. He was a good casting dog, got to the head of his sheep correctly, had fairly strong eye, would walk into the nose with no jump or bounce. He lacked a bit of force (tail end) at gateways with a big mob , but a natural backing dog even in the paddock. I worked him as my main dog for some years and overall I rated him as a very good, sheep or cattle dog. His nature could be described as obedient and attentive.
At the time I had Flint I rarly went to trials, and attend very few now really, but I think he proberly competed in 5 or 6 trials in his life. I am not much help to a dog on a trial ground, but even so I can recall that he ran a second at Koroit once and an equal second at Tubbo Station, he may have got other placings, he never won a trial. He had a good work style, but I am really not a trial man at heart and my dogs are usually straight out of the shearing shed onto the trial ground. I think he would have won trials in the right hands."
I mated him to Ella on two occasions. The first litter there were four pups, I kept a bitch of this mating called 'Ilona' and still have her [1985]. I broke in a dog called 'Buff' [Scoriochre Buff] and sold him out at 7 months of age for $700. He was a very brainy dog, a saddle back, yellow with the black saddle, same as old Rockybar Buff. This 'Buff' is still in our district. I bred a litter by him once out of Le Cliff Blue Rose.
They turned out well, all grandparents Rockybar Buff. Iona was sent to Barambogie Chance recently and had three pups to him, two males and one female. I will keep one of these dogs and also the bitch."

We asked for people who had used
Scoriochre Kelpies to give their comments and received this glowing
review from the Hocking family.
"We can tell you how the good the Scoriochre Kelpies are. We own two bitches (Kate and Hanna) and we are thrilled with what they can do. Their workability and likability are so good - in fact fantastic and they are like family to us. They are good companions as well as the hardest working dogs we have ever had. They are always there ready to go day and night and they don't complain about the work load they just do it.
We have a Rotary Dairy and one stands on the platform that goes around and gets them off the platform and her Mum hunts them down away from the shed and they are are the best Paddock dogs. You send them away and they think for themselves and they go and if we are droving cattle down the road and the gate is open up ahead you just say "Way up" you don't have to even say that they just do it They know what you want and they do it.
Scoriochre Stud.We would recomend to any one who wanted the best. Together the mum and daughter bitches we have make the best team together and we are very pleased with the work they have done for us. "
