SOMETHING ABOUT US - by KDV2911

“What??”

Clay winced at the question that exploded from the mouth of his yet-uninformed soulmate. He wasn’t expecting that reaction. Taking a deep breath, he began again. “I said.. that…” Another deep breath. Something About Us is, well… about… us.” He looked into her eyes, hoping to find some clue as to what she thought beyond the mere shock that was already obvious by the reduced distance between her jaw and the floor. “You know… you and me. Me and… you.”

“That… that’s what I thought you said,” she breathed back. “For a moment I just thought that I was hearing things.”

“Oh.” Clay blinked with disappointment. Far too used to rejection, he could already see what was coming. Her surprise was too complete, her initial reaction too sharp for him to believe he had any chance in winning her heart now… much less her hand. Why, why, why in the world did I think that I had a chance in the first place, he asked himself. Why did I think she would want to be more than just friends with me? What really would she see in me?

He sighed, a deep, silent sigh that came from far deeper than just the pit of his stomach. Why did I think she was willing to make the sacrifices needed to deal with the craziness of my life, why did I think she was willing to make a lifelong commitment to the real me? What in the dickens possessed me to think we were soulmates in the first place? This time he blinked, and he was suddenly aware that he was blinking back tears. He had nothing else to say right now, at least nothing that he could say. Clay forced a smile and turned away.

“Clay?”

Unsure he could take any more, he remained facing the other direction. “Yes?”

“I love you too.”
