AUKS

  • Auks are the common name for web-footed sea birds in the auk and puffin family.
  • The razor-billed auk is black and white with a short tail and short wings.
  • Auks are excellent swimmers and divers and spend most of the year in the open water of the northern Atlantic Ocean, migrating south in winter.
  • There are 22 species of Auks, including the razorbills and puffins.
  • Auks nest in colonies of hundreds even thousands of birds off cliff tops and rocks.
  • Males and females look alike, but there are some seasonal plumage changes.
  • In their annual moult, most species lose all the flight feathers at once and a temporarily flightless.
