BEAVERS


 
  • There are 2 species of beaver and both lead semi-aquatic lives.
  • The Eurasian beaver, is the largest European rodent.
  • Male and female beavers look alike, but males tend to have larger scent glands. These glands produce a musky-smelling secretion, probably used for marking territory boundaries.
  • The beaver's hind feet are webbed like a duck's making it a powerful swimmer. The animal cuts down trees with its strong front teeth and trims off branches to build its island home.
  • Beavers have built a dam 600m (1968 ft) across.
  • Fossils have been found of beavers that 2m (6.5ft) long but the average beaver today is only about 75cm (30 in) long.
  • Beavers are able to stay under water for up to 15 minutes.
