OPOSSUMS


  • Opossums are marsupials found in North and South America. Some look like rats and others look like mice.

  • The Virginia opossum is North America's only marsupial.
  • A female opossum has up to 18 babies each no larger than a honey bee at birth. After about 3 months, they are able to ride around on their mother's backs.
  • Most opossums are forest dwellers, although one exceptional species has taken to an aquatic way of life.
  • The grey four-eyed opossum gains its name from the white eye spots over its actual eyes.
  • There are over 70 species of opossums.
