RACCOONS

  •  No one on record has ever died from Raccoon rabies in the USA, but yet everyone is afraid of them.
  •  Raccoons use their front paws like hands; they can open even secure garbage cans and raid them.
  •  Raccoons belong to the family Proconidae, which also includes the ringtail, caotimundi and lesser panda.
  •  Raccoons are intelligent and have a long memory, plus an acute sense of hearing.
  •  The name raccoon is derived from an American Indian word for "the feeler", as raccoons feel everything around them (especially in water) with their delicate front paws.
  •  People who feed raccoons who visit soon find out that "the word has spread", and many others come by to beg! Some raccoons who have visited people will watch TV or listen to music with their human hosts.
