TIGERS

  •  Out in the open, the tiger's black and orange stripes are dramatic and striking, but against a background of grass and shafts of sunlight, they make hiding easy.

  •  The Bengal tiger has a rich, tawny colour with darker stripes. It inhabits grassy or swampy areas and forests.
  •  The Siberian tiger can jump five metres from a stationary position.
  •  The modern tiger is thought to have originated in northern Asia, crossing the Himalayas about 10,000 years ago.
  •  The tiger is a solitary animal, except during mating time or when sharing food or scarce watering holes
  •  The tiger is the largest member of the cat family.
  •  The rare Siberian tiger has thick yellow fur with dark stripes.
  •  Tigers have been hunted to near extinction by poachers, and all subspecies have been declared endangered.
