A Senior Dog

I'm walking these days a bit slower now--
There's gray on my nose and gray on my brow.
I still love to play and I'll do just fine,
Although you'll have to wake me at siesta time!
I've had a home for many years,
But this strange kennel is lonely and my heart sheds tears.
Did I make you angry with an accident or two?
Were my pills and special diet a burden for you?
Did I ever believe that this day would come-
When you could give up your life companion?
Unconditional love is all that I gave....
Unconditional love I will take to my grave.
Somehow I think my chances are few,
That a loving master will come to replace you.
Maybe if I were a puppy I'd be able to stay,
And my senior health problems wouldn't get in the way.
I don't want to die - I know I have time,
There are just a few quirks in this old age of mine.
I never lost faith or gave up on you,
No matter what you would say or what you would do.
I want so much to leave this place -
To live a happy ending through the Animal Lord ís grace.
I haven't an inch of heart that can't be used,
Yet I sit here alone, dazed and confused...
I guess if I had options, my choices would be,
Please give me a home, or let the Lord adopt me.

Added to my site with loving thoughts of my own 10 year old senior rescue, Holmes, who continues to give more love than I could ever hope to receive. After a long search and being "passed up" because of his age, we finally realized that Holmes already was home and had been for quite some time.

Holmes made his trip finally to Rainbow Bridge just a little more than 2 years after we adopted him, 11/00.  Our heart and home are empty without our special Old Gold.  We are actively searching for our next senior addition.
