Rescued Cocker Spaniels

Just a sampling of the many dogs Shorewood Cocker Spaniel Rescue has saved

"Boomer" was 8 years old when he found himself left behind at Animal Welfare League with his sister. He was the victim of a divorce, and turned up in the shelter because the owner had no where to keep him and no time for him. He is now in his new, happy home!

"Thumper" was brought into Animal Welfare League from an abusive situation. The owner's boyfriend had been physically abusing her and her dog. In fact, the owner's boyfriend was kicking "Thumper" in the shelter's parking lot the night she was relinquished, and was arrested shortly afterwards. "Thumper" was so sweet and gentle, it was hard to believe that anyone could be cruel to her. As you can see, she now has the loving family she deserves that can truly appreciate what a wonderful companion she is.

This page is dedicated to the memory of "Carter," pictured above. "Carter" had come to Animal Welfare League as a very underweight and malnourished stray. He was never claimed, and in his poor condition, quickly and easily became ill at the shelter. Carole Kohler, Director of Shorewood Cocker Spaniel Rescue, opened her home and heart to this orphan, and nursed him back to health. Unfortunately, an underlying congenital heart defect went undiagnosed until he underwent neuter surgery, and he lost his life shortly after, with the strain of surgery being too much for his heart and lungs to handle. "Carter," we will always miss you, but we are grateful that you were so loved in your final days.

Here is "Norton" before (left) and after (right) being accepted into cocker spaniel rescue. He was misunderstood by his previous shelter adopters, who returned him. After cycling through the shelter, he became timid and withdrawn. However, rescue is now working with him to help him regain his confidence and find an adoptive home that will love him for the rest of his life. Update 2/11: Norton is now in a new home! Carole Kohler, Shorewood Cocker Spaniel Rescue Director, had this to say about him:
"The home visit with Norton went very well and he now belongs to Kim Daley. They were very excited to have him and they had a huge crate set up for him with new toys and chew things ready and waiting. They live next to a dog park so they plan to take him there. Kim seemed very dog smart. I'm happy about this family and for Norton."

Here is "Tucker" with his new adoptive family! As you can see, "Tucker" is now in the loving home that he always deserved. "Tucker," previously named "Scuzzlebutt" by the owners that dumped him at the shelter, seemed to be generally neglected and ignored. He had minimal training, and the family that owned him clearly did not understand him. That you to Carole Kohler and Shorewood Cocker Rescue for giving "Tucker" the perfect home! Pictured with "Tucker" is his new owner Elaine Eilman with husband Jim, son Jesse and daughter Bryanna.

Here is "Taz" several weeks and added pounds after being accepted into cocker rescue. "Taz" was a beautiful, but emaciated, owner surrender to the shelter. His pedigree was filled with champions, and he had originated out of show stock, but clearly had fallen into the wrong hands. "Taz" is a perfect example of how even the most responsibly bred dogs can occassionally end up in a rescue situation.

Here are the after pictures of "Danny" after losing many, many pounds of hair. When "Danny" came into the shelter after being found as a stray, he looked like one large, buff colored mop with a happily wagging butt. It was really hard to see what was under all that hair. I sure wish I took a before picture of him. As you can see, he is a very handsome guy now, thank to a really good grooming. He is also in his new home, thanks to the kind and caring volunteers of Shorewood Cocker Spaniel Rescue.

"Frisky" was an owner surrender to the shelter and is now named "Lizzi." Her new owners, Katie and Kevin Toot, write, " She is doing excellent. When she is sitting in your lap and you quit petting her for just a minute, she will start licking our faces. She has been so good. And yet we have not heard her bark. She piddled in the house so far 1 time. That is the only time. She loves going in the car with me and going for walks with the kids. She has no problem when I tell her to go into her crate. She goes right in there at night. She is so good. We are very pleased with her. I do want to thank you for letting us adopt Lizzy. You did make us a very happy family." Thank you, Shorewood Cocker Rescue, for rehoming yet another one of our orphans!
