I Am Kitten

I am kitten, hear me roar!

See me chase toys on the floor.

I will do just what I want,

Obey you? Hmph; I will not!

Give me some, I will take more.

I am kitten, hear me roar!

I am kitten, hear me roar!

I am tabby to the core.

Though you think I'm really cute,

Wait until you see your boot.

To my food dish I will soar,

I am kitten, hear me roar!

I am kitten, hear me roar!

Little mousies I will gore.

Deep inside my fluffy fur,

There are feelings that occur,

I grew up with claws that tore,

I am kitten, hear me roar.

The Kitty Spit Song

Copyright 2004

A collaboration by

N. A. McDowell

and Tammy S. Sanders

As I was talkin' on the phone one day,

paid no mind to what was comin' my way

when my sweet li'l' Misty

dropped her key ring in my coffee.

I was talkin' on the phone to my man right then.

I told him what happened and where it went.

He said "If you drink that coffee,

don't you come 'round kissin' on me."

As I looked at the key ring bobbin' 'round in there,

I saw stuck to it a kitty hair.

I frowned at my li'l' Misty

and told her she was dippy.

Well, I pulled out the key ring and I pulled off the hair.

I threw the key ring and I said, "Over there!"

When she came bringin' it back to me

I quickly moved my coffee.

There's a moral to this story I'm sure you know.

Listen real close, here's how it goes:

If you have a cat who fetches key rings,

guard your cup of coffee.

Chorus: Kitty spit (Oo, oo, ooo)

Kitty spit (Oo, oo, ooo)

Kitty spit (Oo, oo, ooo)

Kitty spit in my coffee.

(Believe it or not, this really is a song! lol)

Paean to My Beloved Socrates

(4/1/86 - 5/19/99)

Socrates my Socrates

sophisticate cat

musing upon windowsill

ponder this 'n that

protégé of mystic lore

inquirer sublime tracing sigils in the air

with his mewing rhyme

Socrates my Socrates

magus black and white

eliciting inner-joy from the tacit light

synthesizing sacred dreams from the scattered parts

catalyzing love divine with his angel heart

Joli Bebe

The girl's father said, "If a home isn't found,

I'll kill them myself or they go to the pound."

A word to my sister, a call on the phone asking,

"Please oh please can you give them a home?"

"Ok," from my folks after sis' & my plea.

Before I saw you, I named you 'Joli..'

I knew when I saw you, you had to be mine.

You're something special. You're one of a kind.

Your beginning was awful, a life filled with dread,

a cage door slammed down on your pretty head.

No room to sleep, picked up by your ears,

and swung by your tail were the least of your fears.

My life really changed when I came home with you!

Each day was special, wonderful and new,

flopped back in my arms, somersaults on the bed,

scrabbling your paws on my books as I read,

riding my shoulders as I cleaned our home.

Having you there, I was never alone.

Through fifteen short years, you gave selflessly.

You'll never know how much you mean to me!

How could I have missed it when you became ill?

I thought it was worms and I gave you a pill.

A trip to the doctor for your loss of weight,

I didn't know then that it was too late.

For awhile you improved and my heart filled with joy

but then came the day I had hoped to avoid.

"She's dying," she said, "and you need to decide

to go home and wait or say now, 'Goodbye.'"

Your long look of love though your end was near,

our last hour drenched in the rain of my tears.

In thinking of you, my guilt rises new.

I can't help but feel that I somehow failed you.

Though memory causes me both joy and pain,

I know in my heart that I'll see you again.

Some time has passed but your spirit's still strong.

I go through my days knowing you're still along.

You watch over me, knead your paws on my heart.

I'm comforted knowing we'll ne'er be apart.

I know when I cross, you'll be waiting for me,

to ride once again on my shoulders with glee,

but until once again, your sweet face I see,

I'll always miss you, my precious Joli.

I'm just not that good. The poems that I've read so far have made me laugh,

think, remember and (I'm not ashamed to say) cry like

a baby! Take a look! You won't want to leave!
