Rasputin was introduced to Nicolas & Alexandra by the Grand Duchess Militza on the 31st October 1905. Mitiza, a daughter of the King of Montenegro who had married into the Russian Imperial Family, was renowned for her interest in spiritalism. Rasputin, did not make a very good 1st impression. One of the most notorious characters in modern Russian history was Rasputin, a religious charlatan & opportunist.For more then 10 years he maintained a hold over Czar Nicolas II & his wife by his ability to relieve the pain of their son Alexis' hemopilia, a painful & often fatal blood disease, he had inherited from his mother. His real name was Gregory Yefimovich Novykh. & born in Pokrovskoye. Siberia. All his life he remained an illiterante peasant. His reputation for wild, licentious living earned him the nickname Rasputin, meaning "debauched one." For a time he studied at a monastery, where he leared doctrine that he corrupted into his own belief, for him that was "the best means of salvation is to indulge one's appetites as much as possible. But a monk, he did not become, instead he married & fathered 4 children. He left his wife to travel as a self-proclaimed holy man. He turned up in St Petersburg, the Russian capital, in 1903 & soon Alexandra, wife of Nicholas II, became especially fond of him & his mysterious powers. When Nicholas went to the front, during WW1 to command his troops, it gave Rasputin the chance to become the most powerful man at court. He appionted church officials, cabinet minsters & even intervened in military matters. His end came when a group of conspiraters lured him to a private home, where on the night of Dec. 29-30, 1916, they poisoned him & shot him, but still he did not die, so they theow him into the Neva River, where he finally drowned. A few weeks later the Russian Revolution ended the rule of the Romanov dynasty. |
