About the Artist

Cathy Steiner is a Boulder artist who has been drawing and painting since childhood. She first won a prize for her work while in grade school by drawing her dog for a local "Doodle a picture of your friend" contest. In high school, Cathy received Honorable Mention for her stencil entry in the Dow Corning Christmas Card Contest. One of her pencil drawings was also selected for use in the Dow Chemical Company calendar.

A student of Fine Arts at Hope College, Cathy studied in Holland, Michigan and in Paris, France. While in Paris, Cathy further developed her drawing abilities, as well as her skills in printmaking. She was awarded Best of Show in her Senior Art Exhibit for a life size calf made of plaster.

Cathy has worked in many media, including pencil, watercolor, and oil. She also enjoys photography and three-dimensional projects. Her current works are in colored pencil. Cathy has fun exploring the delicacy of this medium and the ways the colors can be blended and layered.

One body of work in colored pencil, the Island Series, consists of tropical drawings, primarily based on locations in the Virgin Islands. Cathy is particularly inspired by the Caribbean colors. Other sources of inspiration are animals and nature.

Cathy displayed four of her drawings in the 2003 Boulder Art Association show. Her work is currently on display in the Virgin Islands and in Colorado.
