Special Felines
Special felines, a no-kill shelter, was founded by Nancy Kneessi in the spring of 1992 for the purpose of providing a temporary home for unwanted cats and kittens.
Since March 1992, over 1,000 felines abandoned by society have been placed in suitable, loving homes. Many Special Felines residents come from various Maryland shelters, while others are pets given up by owners desperately searching for a place where their cat can find a new home without the fear of being put to death.
Cats and kittens placed through Special Felines are healthy, desirable pets in search of that one special someone to provide them with a permanent, loving home. The many hours spent in caring for these animals are rewarded when they are successfully placed with their new owners.
All felines for adoption have been tested for feline leukemia and are up to date on their rabies and distemper vaccinations. In most cases, the cat/kitten has been spayed or neutered as this is a requirement for adoption. All Special Felines are placed as indoor pets only!
Special Felines goal is to place well-socialized cats and kittens as household pets into permanent, loving homes.

Placing Your Cat with Special Felines
I will meet with you and your pet at your home or at my Special Felines cattery. A consultation fee of $25 is charged per visit.
Your pet will be evaluated at that time to see if it can be successfully placed in a new home. As you know, animals also have feelings and change can sometimes be traumatic for them. This will be taken into consideration when evaluating your pet.
Special Felines reserves the right to refuse any cat or kitten found to be undesirable for future adoption. In addition, Special Felines requires a current health record on your pet, which includes up-to-date rabies and distemper vaccinations. Upon admittance Special Felines requires feline leukemia test, which can be done by your vet or a Special Felines vet (at owner's expense).
A one-time admittance fee of $175 will be charged to cover food, litter, medical expenses and temporary foster care until your feline is placed in a permanent home. A limited number of felines will be housed at any one time to insure that they receive the best possible care and have a maximum chance of being matched with a suitable family.
If you have any, questions regarding the well-being of your pet, I will be happy to correspond with you regarding its progress, and you will be informed when your pet is placed in a new home.

Nancy's Statement
The welfare of animals is an important part of my life.
During the summer of 1991, I fostered 178 cats and kittens for a local rescue group. I have worked as a receptionist at the Chesapeake Animal Clinic Hospital and am currently involved with several humane organizations.
These experiences inspired me to offer an alternative to turning a pet over to an animal facility where it would be one of many and have a chance of finding a new home.
Since 1992, I have devoted my attention to the hundreds of cats and kittens in my care, and have successfully found homes for the majority. I look forward to continuing to provide a safe, comfortable and compassionate cattery for the felines in my care.
Many thanks to all my friends and especially to Kaaren Oakley and Bob and Linda Walton for their continued support and help in caring for the animals.
