The City Council bill that mandates a full-service animal shelter in each borough and mandatory spaying/neutering of all shelter adoptions and pet shop sales of cats and dogs, will be signed into law next week by Mayor Giuliani in a ceremony at City Hall. The public is invited.

Donald Trump could be in the dog house with animal rights activists. On the heels of an exclusive “Dateline NBC” investigation of so-called puppy mills — places where dog are raised in dire conditions and often suffer from untreated wounds and rotted teeth, and are forced to eat dog food crawling with maggots — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is demanding that Donald Trump evict Le Chien, an upscale pet store in Trump Plaza. PETA says it has documentary evidence that Le Chien uses animals from one of the country’s most notorious puppy mills and is asking the developer to replace the pet store with an animal shelter. “You are in an excellent position to be part of the solution to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem,” PETA wrote.

Le Chien didn’t return calls for comment. “I don’t know anything bad about them,” Trump told The Scoop. “I lease space to them. They’re current on their rent and they have a lease. How do you boot someone who has a lease?”
