Biography of KEVIN EDWARD ROECKL (pronounced RO-kul)
Born in 1957, Roeckl’s art education came from his father, an art collector and talented amateur artist. At age 18 Kevin landed a position with a graphic design firm in southern California. Roeckl’s three years with this company honed his
discipline and technical accuracy. Feeling a need for creative
freedom, Roeckl moved into the world of fine art, and his one-man gallery shows proved to be extremely popular. Designed by
the artist as a sensual experience, the viewer was led into a
magical realm with music and narration, through theme rooms
enhanced with period furniture and fresh flowers. During the
1980’s Roeckl published a series of posters and limited-edition
prints of his work. “People tell me that what they love about my
work is that it’s so real.”, Roeckl says. To achieve this
convincing realism the artist draws upon a reference library of
thousands of images he has photographed over three decades.
Because his work is so precisely detailed, he studies these
reference images to see exactly how a scene or object looks: the
play of light and shadow, it’s texture and nuances of color.
Thirty or forty photographs might influence a painting, and
Roeckl’s vivid imagination combines the parts into an evocative
scene painted with photographic precision.
About 8 years ago, Roeckl began painting his beloved dog, Jake,
a Doberman. When the work was displayed at the Dobeman National
Specialty Show, the paintings sold out. “I paint from the
heart,” Kevin says, “and people respond to the emotional
investment that goes into each piece.” Soon other dog owners
were commissioning Kevin to portray their dogs. Before he begins
a portrait, Kevin interviews the owner and studies as many
photographs of the dog as possible, to get a sense of the pet’s
personality. “I seem to have the ability to capture the spirit
and essence of the individual. When I am working on a portrait,
I study the individual to where I feel as if I know and love
that dog myself. If it’s a memorial portrait (a painting
commissioned after the pet has passed away) I often get tears in my eyes while I’m working. I sometimes feel I’m experiencing a
spiritual contact from the dog.” Apparently Roeckl’s satisfied
customers agree. Many clients have cried with emotion when they
saw their finished portrait. For those lucky enough to own one
of his paintings, Roeckl’s sensitivity and artistic skill
promises to bring many more years of enjoyment.
