Jo’s synopsis of the SC Waddle in Charleston, SC
For the South Carolina Basset Hound Rescue (NC & SC)

We had such a great time in Charleston! Greg & Sharon did a fantastic job of organizing that event. We don’t know how they managed to have warm, sunny days every day. That had to take some planning! Maybe La Nina like Bassets.
We got to Charleston Friday afternoon (12/4) and settled into our first floor, ocean front room and we watched the surfers surfing through our big sliding glass door. (Some were hanging their wetsuits on the balconies above us, dripping from time to time on our heads). Such a beautiful hotel!
This is quite a departure for Michigan folks in December, and it was so much warming than last year in Charleston. We were in heaven!
That evening we had dinner with Brenda, Poots (the lovebirds), Sharon and Greg at a restaurant called Busheys. They gave us a private room (we we’re a little rowdy) in the Pilot House of a shrimp boat. We can’t remember when we had so much FUN! The margaritas were flowing (Bern bought us a pitcher of "Golden Cadillac" margaritas) Bren gave the waiter the ingredients and he returned to tell us the price. Bren said, "I’m on vacation." The waiter cam back to ask us if we drooled. He said he told another couple in the dining room about the folks in the private room who ordered the BIG PITCHER of MARGARITAS. They asked him "Oh, ask them if they drool!" We said, "We sure do, Send ‘em over" He did. What fun!
Speaking of margaritas, Ernestine and Charles kept us pretty much supplied with them all weekend. Our room was at the end of the hotel with a nice large cement patio area where we all congregated to party.
On Saturday we met The Seafarer Crew with Vanda (pronounced: Vonda" or you’ll be sorry) and other Waddlers such as Myra from Baton Rouge. We attempted to do the Charleston "Walk" that morning but it was just too hot for our Northern Yankee basset, Sophie, and we had to stop. We understand everyone who went enjoyed it allot. We had dinner at T-Bonz where we got tot visit with allot of our Carolina rescue friends such as Pauline Grimball, who lives in Charleston, and the Morrisseys from North Carolina. We had a larger room there this year because there we allot more of us.

Now, about Sunday! WOW AGAIN!

We were anxious to get to the sign-in place to see Ernestine and Charles’ "Great Canadian Basset Hound Dog Sled Team". We weren’t disappointed. It was fabulous, unbelievable! We can’t believe they pulled it off! You’ve got to see this thing. It will be at the MI Waddle on May 16th. The Bassets (all five) actually waddled the whole parade route (going in the same direction at the same time.) Hercules took Jenny’s’ place leading the team and he did her proud. We knew about the dog sled team and it took off pressure for us to compete in the costume contest, so we just put Christmas garlands around our kids' necks.
There were some great costumes. There were two shepherds with their Bassets dressed like sheep. Some dressed like Christmas presents, some angels, at least one devil and Bill Morrissey dressed like the Big Bad Wolf with his Basset dressed like Little Red Riding Hood.
Our delicate (lazy) Sophie and Jo (lazy too) rode in the Pooped Pup Pickup Truck which, incidentally, was one of the hits of the parade! Jo was chomping on boiled peanuts purchased from a sidewalk vendor. YUM! The staging area this year was allot closer to the start of the parade than it was last year (’97) and it was nice & shady too. All the Waddlers visited and socialized while waiting for the parade to start, watching other entries.
There were lots of Confederate soldiers with canons and Scarlet O’Hara’s and even some people dressed as slaves! We Yankees got a little nervous. On the parade route people were hanging out windows to watch and some were partying on the sidewalks. The crowd cheered at the first glimpse of the Bassets and especially the dog sled team.

Our THANKS to Sharon & Greg! They did a fabulous job of planning and hosting the entire weekend.
