If you like the Rottweilers this is the place for you. If you don't maybe you can learn something. |
History: This breed was known at one time as the Rottweiler Metgerhund, named after the town that produced it and its task as the butcher's dog. Its believed by many that is stems from mastiff stock that crossed the Alps while herding cattle used to feed the Roman soldiers who invaded central Europe. Active, agile, and full of stamina, this dog was later bred to manage livestock. Its outstanding strength also made larger Rottweilers ideal for pulling carts to market. In the 20th century, cattle driving and the use of dogs as cart pullers was outlawed. The Rottweilers almost became extinct. In later years, it regained favor as a police dog, household pet, and guard dog. |

Care: Even though the coat is short it still need to be wiped and massaged with a damp towel, then rubbed dry. A bath is needed when the dogs get dirty. Nails need to be trimmed every week to 2 weeks. The ears need to be cleaned weekly. Care is also needed in maintaining a healthy balanced diet, exercise, and play, with food being divided in half and given twice a day rather then all at once. Puppies should also not do stairs (except maybe a couple) for the first 6-12 months of age. they should also be restricted from jumping and kept off slick surfaces. |
Excerise: After the dog is 18 months, vigorous exercise should include running on lead alongside a bicycle or motor bike. Be aware that even as puppies this breed needs a lot of free exercise. They should also be maintained on 2000 mgs of vitamin C. |
Training: Obedience training and socialization should begin early. Having as much contact with people, children, animals as possible to accustom them to activity around them! |
Puppies: usually 4-10 in a litter, moms have to be watched because they can be heavy footed and step on a puppy accidently cause possible death. Puppies also need to be kept very warm for the first week, about 95 degrees and about 80 degrees following before you breed learn what is required! Also Rottweilers are more open to Parvo so contact with the outside should be none until they are 8 weeks and have their second shot. |
