Every rat I've ever come across has loved to play.  Babies love toilet paper tubes, they crawl through them, chew them, roll them around, you name it!  Even adults enjoy them, though most don't fit through anymore.  Kleenex and paper towels are favorite beds, and small boxes are great to sleep in.  Rags are also nice and warm for the winter.  My rats also like to roll around balls, but not to a very extreme degree. Rat wheels weren't really a big hit either.  They have problems with their tails getting stuck in it.  Rat balls, like the hamster balls, that roll around with the rat inside, weren't very popular.  The rats did however find them to be good beds!  Summit loves to climb things, she loves ladders, hanging ropes, and sticks to climb on.  Just be careful not to give them a piece of wood that could get them sick, like pine.  Now, one of the all-time favorite toys for a rat is a tunnel, of course!  They love the little tubes running all over, and you'll be amazed how fast they learn what goes where.  Two-liter plastic pop bottles are absolutely perfect for this.  Cut off the ends and tape them together with duct tape or some other strong tape. You can make whatever twists and turns you want by cutting out a side instead of an end, or making T junctions. They won't go in if you force them, I know from experience.  Put one end in the cage, if you can, and let them explore for themselves at their own pace.  The pitter-patter of feet on plastic will become a very constant sound!  Air holes in tubes are a good idea, my rats love to stop and sniff every now and then, and it also reduces the smell that inevitablely shows up in time.  This is another good thing about pop bottles; they're replaceable. Rats also love to be tickled, under the arms, on their rear end, on the shoulders, whatever!  It cracks me up every time they spin around and start hopping in circles when I do this!  Talk about an energy burst!  Just tickle them like you would a young child, and watch the fireworks!  Peek-a-boo is also interesting with a rat, and some love to play hide-and-go-seek too! One of their all time favorites is to chase things. Streak is the best at this game. I discovered her hunting instinct one day while I was playing with a bookmark with a tassle on the end. The tassle dangled down and tweaked her whiskers as she cleaned her face next to me. Suddenly, she sprang! She ferociously grabbed the threads and hung on tight as she snapped at it! All I have to do is lightly drag it along the ground, and she chases it at full speed across the floor! She doesn't ever really hurt it, but she does love to chase! Occasionally the other rats join in too. She also likes toy mice, like the kind sold for cat toys. These she really does attack, chewing them up whenever I'm too slow! Finally, they also enjoy feathers, all four of them. Just watch your fingers! They chase them, they attack them, they throw them, it's hilarious!
