| The LHASA APSO breed is over 2000 years old originating in Tibetan monasteries. The breed was hidden away for centuries, protected by the Himalayas with their inhospitable terrain. The dogs known as lucky talismans, were never sold but occasionally given as gifts by the monks to honoured visitors. Political dignitaries, favoured traders, British Medical Corps officers as well as British and American explorers were some of the recipients. |

| In 1885, the breed was known in England but not recognized by The Kennel Club until l933. In 1934, LHASA APSOS were recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club. |

| The LHASA APSO is a small hardy breed with a well developed body which is rectangularly shaped and longer than tall. It stands from ten to eleven inches as an adult with the upper limit of eleven and a half inches at the shoulder. |
| LHASA APSOS come in solid and parti-coloured patterns in all canine colours and mixtures of colours. No coat colour is incorrect but it must be accompanied by a black nose. An adult LHASA APSO carries a heavily plumed tail over its back and has abundant ear and head furnishings. The head hair is often tied up in two pony tails. Puppies are born smooth coated but with noticeable coat growth by ten days. The coat never stops growing. The LHASA APSO requires regular grooming. |
