NIAD is needed because today there are thousands of pet shops that sell iguanas either very cheap or give them away when you purchase a set up from them. Today iguanas are sometimes referred to as the "disposable" pet. Many iguanas that are sold do not even reach one year of age. Why is this? Because of the false information that many pet shops give to their customers about the proper care of the iguanas. Many people are still under the understanding that iguanas only eat lettuce and some fruit, or that they eat mice, dog food, cat food, crickets, worms etc. This is completely false. Also, the pet shops tell their customers that you only need a 10 gallon tank to keep them in or that they do not need UVB lighting and get heat from heatrocks. This Is False. Iguanas have very specific needs that must be met for their over all health and well being. This is why NIAD is needed. It is needed to put a stop to all of the iguana abuse and neglect as well as all the untrue information about iguana care.
