Before me, mommy was an advent cat lover. She has had cats all her life with the exception of two dogs, Kelly was a silver German Shepard and Cuddles was a toy fox terrier. After mommy was on her own, she was owned mostly by cats, Sophia, Alex, Huey, Max, Bo & Sam. We live on a very busy street and all except Max & Sam were found hit by cars. Now, don't think my mommy is mean or careless. She allowed the cats to wonder and play outside because the cats liked to be outdoor cats. They liked to follick in the grass & bring prizes home to mommy. Alex & Huey were what we call "mousers". One day mommy had to run some errands up town & when she returned home Alex had a prize for her...It was a bird. Alex was so proud of herself that she brought it right to mommy. Huey was a mouser like his mother. One day, there was a mocking bird that was terriorizing the cats as well as Mommy & Daddy, Daddy said as soon as it swoops Huey, it was a dead duckling. Daddy was right!!! Huey was swooped and within in hours, Huey had captured the bird. The last time mommy allowed any of the cats out was when Bo was hit by a big white truck. I know this because mommy told me....she witnessed it. Well, anyway, she thought that Sport was inside and saw who she thought was Bo in the middle of the street...she began to call to Bo but it was really Sport. All of a sudden out from across the street Bo comes a runnin'. A white truck was speeding down the road and I guess Bo didn't see it and the truck hit him. The truck didn't even stop, mommy said. She ran to Bo but he got up and ran into the neighbors yard and then collapsed. She went the neighbor's yard to get Bo but he ran under the neighbor's house so Mommy called to her neighbor, Becky, and she went under her house and brought Bo out to Mommy. Mommy was sobbing, holding her little baby in her arms as he took his last breath of life. From that point on, Mommy swore that her babies would remain inside. Mommy has a burial site for all her babies except for Sophia & Max. Sophia was killed in November of 1987. Mommy came home from work one Friday afternoon before a football game and found Sophia lying on the front porch of her apartment. Some band parents of mommy's buried Sophia because Mommy didn't have the strength to bury Sophia herself. Mommy told me that Sophia thought she was a dog because she would play fetch with mommy. Mommy had brought Sophia all the way from Troy, Alabama with her when she received her job in Florida. Max, however, disappeared in July of 1993, after Mommy & Daddy had returned from a vacation. When they arrived home, they let the cats outside and Max never returned home. Max had been rescued by Mommy along with two of his littermates that died shortly after mommy rescued them. They were only days old when they were found by a janitor at Mommy's school who was going "to dispose of them". Well, my mommy, being an animal lover and all, rescued them only to find heartache as well as joy. She would take them back & forth to work with her so that she could feed them every four hours. Max was the strong one, always crying. Mommy didn't know that at the time but she perserved & tried her best to save all the kittens but "Myer the crier" as mommy nicknamed him, was a survivor. Max had bonded to Mommy so much that he would treat her as if she were a cat...I think maybe he thought he was human. Oh, I almost forgot Sam. Sam was an orange kitten that Mommy got from one of her coworkers. She loved Sam so much but the poor little thing had undeveloped kidneys, whatever that means. Mommy loves orange cats because she had another cat named "Sunny" when she was a girl and he was orange, too. Anyway, Mommy did everything she could for Sam and Mommy's vet, Dr. Bryan did, too. Sam was in the hospital for several days. Alas, Dr. Bryan had to make that dreaded phone call to Mommy to tell her that Sam was not going to get any better and it was up to Mommy what to do. Dr. Bryan suggested letting Sam go....After many tears & phone calls to Daddy, they decided it would be best for Sam to be out of pain & suffering. In tears, Mommy told Dr. Bryan to go ahead with the procedure. It broke Mommy's heart but she knew Sam would be better off at Rainbow Bridge where he could be whole again & play with the other kitties that had gone before him. |
