Congressman Elton Gallegly has introduced the Bear Protection Act, H.R.
397, to end America's involvement in the disastrous trade in bear
gallbladders and bile. H.R. 397 will prohibit the import, export, and interstate
commerce in bear viscera. The bill, which was introduced on February 6, 2001,
currently has 93 bipartisan cosponsors and we need to keep building that
list. Please contact your Representative today and urge her or him to
cosponsor the Bear Protection Act.

The Bear Protection Act was unanimously passed by the Senate last
year but the House of Representatives failed to act. We can build on that
momentum and see the bill passed during this Congress with your help. A Senate
companion to H.R. 397 is expected to be introduced soon by Kentucky Senator
Mitch McConnell.
