FIRST AID REQUIREMENTS.

FIRST AID EQUIPMENT SHOULD BE READILY AVAILABLE AT ALL TIMES. FOR THIS REASON I SUGGEST HAVING TWO SEPARATE KITS, ONE FOR TRAVELLING AND ONE FOR THE HOME BASE OR KENNELS. THE LIST GIVEN BELOW WILL EQUIP YOU FOR MOST EMERGENCY SITUATIONS.

EPSOM SALTS                     MERCUROCHROME                 MILK OF MAGNESIA

SOAP (GERMICIDAL)             TALCUM POWDER (MEDICATED)

THESE KITS SHOULD BE CHECKED FROM TIME TO TIME BOTH FOR HYGIENE AND CLEANLINESS BUT ALSO BECAUSE SOME OF THE ITEMS ARE PERISHABLE AND SOME OF THE MEDICINES WILL HAVE A USE BY DATE.

IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE A LIST IN THE CHEST SO THAT ANYONE ELSE WITH A NEED TO USE THE KIT WILL KNOW WHAT EACH ITEM IS FOR.

SOME OF THE ITEMS IN THE MEDICINE CHEST NEED NO EXPLANATION AND SOME OF THEM HAVE LESS OBVIOUS USES IN AN EMERGENCY.

2" TAPE OR BANDAGES CAN BE USED TO MUZZLE DOGS BEFORE TREATMENT AS YOU MAY BE EXPOSED TO PAIN OR FEAR BITING.

BORIC POWDER MAY BE USED TO BATHE THE EYES IN A VERY DILUTE MIXTURE.

CHARCOAL TABLETS (ACTIVATED) FOR POISONING ALSO IF THE DOG HAS FOUL BREATH.

EPSOM SALTS TO SOAK MINOR INFECTIONS, AS A LAXATIVE AND IN SMALL DOSES AS AN ANTIDOTE FOR SOME POISONS.

HYDROGEN PEROXIDE 3% SOLUTION, VERY QUICK ACTING FOR TOAD POISONING: CAN BE USED STRAIGHT OR MIXED WITH EQUAL PARTS WATER: CAN BE USED TO INDUCE VOMITING IN THE CASE OF POISONING WHERE VOMITING SHOULD BE INDUCED; OR TO FLOAT FOREIGN BODIES FROM THE EAR OR FROM WOUNDS AND IS ALSO A GENERAL ANTISEPTIC DISINFECTANT.

MERCUROCHROME IS A GOOD THOUGH UNSIGHTLY ANTISEPTIC FOR CUTS AND OR ABRASIONS.

MILK OF MAGNESIA FOR UPSET STOMACHS DUE TO HIGH ACID, STRESS OR TOO RICH A FOOD SUBSTANCE, ALSO FOR COLIC OR FLATULENCE.

MINERAL OIL TO BE USED WHERE LUBRICATION IS NECESSARY OR AS AN ENEMA WHERE CONSTIPATION OR IMPACTED FAECES IS A PROBLEM. IT IS SYRINGED DIRECTLY INTO THE RECTUM.

HONEY REDUCES THE RISK OF SHOCK SYNDROME AND IN THE CASE OF ANY INJURY OR BITE/STING OR ANY HIGH STRESS SITUATION TREAT FIRST WITH HONEY THEN APPLY THE NECESSARY FIRST AID. HONEY MAY ALSO BE APPLIED TO WOUNDS OR BURNS. WHEN MIXED WITH BRANDY IT IS AN EXCELLENT STIMULANT FOR THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM AND CAN BE USED IN HEART ATTACK OR RESUSCITATION WHERE BREATHING AND/OR HEARTBEAT APPEAR TO BE ABSENT (NEWBORN PUPS) USE AS LITTLE AS IS NEEDED TO GET THE REQUIRED RESPONSE.

EUCALYPTUS OIL WILL SOFTEN CONTAMINANTS IN THE COAT SUCH AS CHEWING GUM, TAR AND OTHER DRIED MATTER. IT CAN BE DROPPED ONTO A TICK THAT WILL RELEASE IT'S GRIP AND THEN CAN BE REMOVED, AND CAN ALSO BE TOUCHED ONTO A FLEA TO IMMOBILISE IT SO IT CAN BE PICKED OFF THE DOG AND DISPOSED OF.

SPLINTING MATERIAL CAN BE ANYTHING FROM RULERS, STIFF CARDBOARD, STICKS OR THE CARDBOARD ROLL FROM THINGS LIKE KITCHEN WRAPS TOILET TISSUES AND GIFT PAPER, CHOOSE WHICHEVER IS THE EASIEST TO CARRY AND BEST SUITED IN SIZE FOR THE BREED YOU WILL BE LIKELY TO HAVE TO TREAT. REMEMBERING THAT YOURS MAY NOT BE THE ONLY DOGS AT THE VENUE AND OTHER PEOPLE MAY NOT HAVE ANY IDEA OF CARRYING A FIRST AID KIT UNTIL THEY HAVE TO CALL ON ONE.

AFTER TREATING ANY ANIMAL, REMEMBER, THIS WAS ONLY FIRST AID NOT NECESSARILY THE FINAL AID OR EVEN THE RIGHT AID. IT IS MEANT ONLY TO BE AN ASSISTANCE MEASURE, TO ENABLE THE ANIMAL TO BE FURTHER EXAMINED AND, IF NECESSARY TREATED BY A QUALIFIED VET. FOR THIS REASON WE ADVISE YOU NOTE DOWN THE SIGNS YOU OBSERVED THAT BROUGHT ABOUT THE TREATMENT YOU INITIATED AND WHAT THAT TREATMENT WAS. NOTE ALSO THE TIME AND DOSAGE OF ANY MEDICATION GIVEN, AND GET THE ANIMAL'S OWNER TO INITIAL THESE NOTATIONS TO ABSOLVE YOU OF ANY BLAME OR RESPONSIBILITY; OTHERWISE LET THEM HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR KIT BUT OFFER NO ADVICE OR ASSISTANCE OTHER THAN THAT WHICH IS ASKED DIRECTLY OF YOU.
