PUPPY REFLEXES



 

AGE IN DAYS REFLEX AND STIMULUS NORMAL RESPONSE
1-15 Crossed extensor:  pinch one hind foot between your fingers puppy withdraws that foot and extends the other 
1-17 Magnus:  turn the head to one side the legs on the side the head is turned extend while the others withdraw
1-13 Rooting:  form a cup with your hand,put the cup over puppy's muzzle touching sides, slowly slide the "cup" forward  puppy will crawl forward maintaining contact with the cupped hand
1-22 Urination:  touch or stroke external genitalia puppy will urinate
1-4 Breathing:  rubbing puppy's underbelly causes puppy to  to take a breath
1-18 Head Turning:  stroking one side of the face or behind one ear Head is turned towards the side  being stimulated
1-19 Touch Muscle:  stroking skin on back Rapid contraction
of skin
1-15 Pain Withdrawal:  pinch between toes Withdrawal of limb  distress cries
1 Touch Blink:  touch the closed  eye lightly  Muscles around eye will  contract in a blink

Light Blink:  shine torch light Alternatively, onto eyes
  Eyes blink 
4-18 Extensor Dominance:  pup picked up by scruff All legs extend outward
5- (placing -- &15 supporting)  Forelimb placing and supporting:  lowering puppy to table Forelegs extend to hold weight of puppy when they touch the surface
8 (placing -- & 15 supporting) Hindlimb Placing and Supporting: lowering blindfolded puppy to table surface Hindlegs extend to hold weight
6 Shiver: puppy begins to shiver if cold 
15 Sitting  Upright: Puppy is able to balance while sitting
21 Standing  Upright: Puppy is able to stand steady on all fours
24 Auditory Startle:  loud sudden noise Legs and head pull intowards body eyes blink
24 Auditory Orientation:  sound stimulation to side of pup Head turns to side of noise
24 Visual Orientation:  Movement or light to side of puppy Head turns towards visual stimulation
27 Visual Cliff:  Puppy placed on edge of table facing forward over edge Puppy hesitates or pulls back and will not step off edge
