Whimsy: the Wee White Won
Whimsy is a seven and one-half year old Westhighland
White Terrier who doesn't quite understand that he's a dog, owing his name to
acombination of personality and the aptness of the logo on the Wimsey coat of
arms in the Dorothy Sayer novels : 'where my whimsy takes me'. Although his
early life was difficult, being one of six siblings born to a teenage mother
and an absentee father, he has prevailed despite the odds, which include
blindness in his left eye (congenital cataract) and an early operation to
remove the femoral head of his left hip (Legge Perthe disease). In addition, he
suffers from osteopenia (deriv. Latin ‘not
enough bones’), although the latter is a self-made diagnosis. Given all this,
his perpetually cheery disposition and his recent (1999) appointment to the
Canadian space program are an inspiration to us all. He wishes to acknowledge
his housemates, Atul and Celia, promising not to forget the 'little people' now
that he's famous. Although he feels they're a bit parsimonious with the dog
biscuits, he enjoys their company and frequent walks. He also wishes to
