Malcolm is the second addition to Ken & Ronnie's family, coming to live with them on April 19, 1999. Ken & Ronnie were thinking about adding another Cairn when Lynda at Potomac Cairn Rescue said they had a 7 year old male available and to let her know if they knew anyone who would want him. Since Malcolm got along well with other dogs, Ken & Ronnie decided to take a look at him. He was about 7 lbs. overweight: at 28 lbs. almost twice the weight of Shell. They decided to see if Shell would tolerate him, so they were introduced on neutral ground. Shell wasn't thrilled by the idea of Malcolm, but was okay as long as he stayed a few feet away and didn't move towards her "space". Next, Ken & Ronnie did a lot of soul searching and consulting with Lynda and some trainers. They decided that Shell would eventually accept Malcolm once she got used to having him around. So, Malcolm came to live with them and Shell has accepted him as a member of the family and even tries to give him kisses. Malcolm is a product of divorce. He lived with his littermate and was the wife's dog, but she decided to keep only his brother. Malcolm is somewhat reserved with strangers, but craves affection and definitely gravitates more towards women. He loves to hunt: chasing squirrels, birds, and bumble bees, but toads and chipmunks are the focus of his world. He spends most of his day at the window watching for them, and barking, whining, and pawing at the window when he spots one. Malcolm has lost the extra weight and has become much more active and agile since he's come to his new home. He is learning how to play and likes to chase a toy when it is thrown. His favorite toy is a plush hedgehog that he likes to spontaneously pounce upon and shake, and pull out the fur. He has become more confident and more outgoing overall. "If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you;
that is the principal difference between a dog and a man." -Mark Twain |
