HARD TO OWN

by Sandra Plancich & Gayle Kompare

Am Staffs are a hard breed to own,
Difficult to have and find a good home,
"He's mean and vicious" people say,
"The whole breed should be put away".

The papers report that they maim and kill,
Politicians outlaw with a bill.
I can't live where I would like,
"No Am Staffs wanted", they say with spite.

So why, I ask, do I even try,
To own a dog that's so maligned,?
If you want an answer, I say with a cry,
Just sit still and I'll tell you why.

They're faithful and loyal, brave and true,
Undaunted courage of the purest blue.
Ready to defend with life and limb,
Even in old age, when eyes grow dim.

Able to discern friend from foe,
Whichever you are - they will know.
Protecting me even while I sleep,
I have no worries while in their keep.

A heart as big as all outdoors,
Steadfast devotion they outpour.
Asking nothing in return,
It's just your love for which they yearn.

You see, the breed is not at fault,
But rather bad owners that we should halt.
So please, don't judge them by a few,
Give them a chance, you'll love them too.
