East Siberian
Laika
The working laikas of what was once the Soviet Union may indeed represent the link
between the wolf-like spitzen and the world's dog-like dogs. The East Siberian Laika today
is more of a mix of these working "barkers" than an individual breed. Soviet
breeders are working sedulously to establish the type. Historically the laikas were used
for pulling and hunting. Among their quarry are the bear, elk, reindeer and marten. Only
the strongest of the pack are used for large game. The Orientals also had a fancy for the
Laika, and many were eaten by them. Though the Siberian Laikas resemble the wolf, more or
less, they are even tempered, calm easily trained, and very obedient.
Height - 22 to 25 inches (56 to 64 cm). Weight - 40 to 50 pounds (18 to 23 kg).
Coat type - plush, short to medium with the head covered with shorter hair than the
body.
Color - either solid or piebald white, gray, tan, red or black.
WEST SIBERIAN LAIKA
Of the two Siberian Laikas, the West dog is more numerous and more
firmly established in type. The Russian Laikas are used for sleddogs and for hunting
big game. The sable or ermine, however, is this hunter's speciality. The hunters from
Khantu and Mansi breed the dogs for their working purposes. In origin, the West Siberian
Laika comes from the indigenous stock from which the other laikas also descend. The
individual dog works less than a decade because the work is so strenuous. Without the
laikas, the hunters surely would not survive.
Height - 21 to 24 inches ( 53 to 61 cm). Weight - 40 to 50 pounds (18 to 23 kg).
Coat type _ short and stand-offish. Color - solid or piebald in
white, tan, red, white, or black.

RUSSO-EUROPEAN LAIKA
The awesome Russo-European Laika is closely
related to the Karelian Bear Laika. Russian breeders crossed the Karelian Bear Laika with
the Utchak Sheepdog, an absolutely fearless and intrepid animal that needn't think twice
when encountering Cerberus or a similarly formidable beast, and the result was the
Russo-European Laika. The Laika is an intrepid bear hunter, also used on boar, moose and
wolf.
This dog is by no means a family pet; the Russo-European Laika acquired much of the
Utchak's fearless nature and is qualmless to attack a full-grown animal. If this audacity
could be focused, the breed would be a true man-stopping guard dog.
Height - 21 to 24 inches (53 to 61 cm). Weight - 45 to 50 pounds ( 20 to 23 kg). Coat
type - short. Color - usually black and white.
