Have a Question? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Since I've had my web page up, I've received many e-mails from people who need advice about rabbits. Since I can't always answer these questions, I thought that I would put up a special section on my site where people could post questions that they had about rabbits. So, here's how it works: I have changed this page. It used to be that you would e-mail me your questions and I would post them and then e-mail back the answers. Now I have a message board especially for rabbit questions. Post your questions there and check back to see if they've been answered. If you can answer a question that you see on my web page: Click the reply function and type up your answer! Your reply will then be posted to the message board. So, then what happens? Anyone who stops by can read your answers. This function benefits many people. |

Subject: (no subject) The weather here in Florida is very hot and humid and it seems to be affecting my bunnies. I have had these rabbits for many years and they stay in good health as a rule but in the past couple of weeks I have noticed symptoms in three of my six outdoor rabbits. One has had soft stools and I have been cleaning her bottom and giving her hay and more fiber and this has helped however now she has a runny nose and is sneezing. My vet recomended that I start Baytril and keep an eye on her. Now another one is getting a runny nose and I noticed today that one has a runny eye. I have been searching the internet for hours and found a lot of information and I read about how heat can cause similar problems. I could use some input because I don't know whether to medicate all of them of a different angle. I am trying the frozen water containers in the cages and antibiotic ointments in the eye. Any advice would be helpful so I can avoid having six sick bunnies. Thanks Re: (no subject) I live in FL and my bunny also got a runny nose. When they have it you should keep that bunny solitare, so it doesn't spread. Feed him carrots and lettuce to help him heal. Make sure he's eating how much he's supposed to. It wouldn't be a bad idea to put the sick bunnies in the house (if they aren't potty trained bring their cage in). Pay very close attention to your bun, especially if they are old. I had a 9yo bunny that got sick and died not long after it. I think the cold just weakened her. Hope this helps, and if you have any more questions write me at "sgtpony@aol.com". Re: (no subject) Thanks for your reply to my question. I'm happy to report that my bunny is responding to treatment. I have been giving her baytril (10mg twice a day for a 7-8 lb. rabbit) and she no longer has a runny nose and her stools are not as soft thanks to the fiber (Timothy hay, rolled oats and carrots). The other bunny with the runny eye responded well to Terramycin ointment in his eye once a day. For any bunny owners in Florida I reccommend using frozen water jugs (old milk containers) in their cages. It helps cool the temperature. They will lay next to it after they get used to it being there. [NOTE FROM BUNNYMOM5: Find more ideas on keeping your rabbit cool here!] Thank you to the other person who wrote in. If anyone ever has a bunny question please write to me and I'll do what I can to help. I have learned a lot about rabbits over the years because of the lack of vets in this area that know how to treat them. I have had to do a lot of research on my own. I have had bunnies with pseudomonis, pasturella, stroke, malclusion, wry neck, and fly strike to name a few. I rescue bunnies from owners who don't want them anymore or aren't caring for them properly and try to find proper homes for them or keep them myself. My Brittania Petite that lives in my home is one such rescue and I wouldn't know what to do without him. He is my little buddy. I know how easy it is to fall in love with a rabbit and how sad it is when they get sick and you feel helpless so I am more than happy to help and applaude your efforts with your web page. Thanks again |

Subject: Oreo Do you know what is wrong with our rabbit Oreo? Here are the symptoms: It can't move its hind legs and drags them to move. Here are the statistics: Age: 1 1/2 Sex: Female Never bred or spayed Lives outside with two other rabbits in a hutch lined with cedar bark. Subject: Re: Oreo I discussed your question with others on the Internet. Cedar isn't good for rabbits. Perhaps she injested some of the bark from her hutch? Contact your vet ASAP! This sounds like a serious problem. Also, you should move your rabbits to a new cage. I hope Oreo gets better! Subject: Re: Oreo Hi everyone. This is Bunnymom5 writing to say that I received a letter from Oreo's owner saying that Oreo has passed away. Thank you to everyone who helped with this question. Please continue to post ideas, however, as others can learn from it. Subject: Re: Oreo Hmmm. If you check out the link http://members.aol.com/pcfbunrab/cedar.html that may help Oreo's owner. Oreo may not have eaten the bark - just urinating on it would be as bad as urinating on cedar shavings. :< Cedar can trigger breathing, metabolism and liver problems in buns is the gist of it. |
