In spring 2000 we removed the vinyl flooring from our kitchen, not really knowing what would be underneath. Thankfully, we had wood flooring which was attractive once it was refinished. (There are always surprises in renovation.) The main part of the kitchen has white oak flooring, with red oak in the breakfast area. We already had a round oak breakfast table which looks great with the floor. You have to be prepared for the worst when you start a renovation, with a budget for unexpected expenses, but the results can be quite rewarding.
In August 2003, we removed carpet in the living room, dining room and hallway, and were blessed with oak flooring that didn't even need refinishing. Getting rid of the carpeting has helped reduce allergies.
