This early spring crop should be direct-seeded about 4 weeks before last frost date with successive plantings every 2 weeks. they grow best in cool weather and warm days will cause sharp strong flavor. Plant 1/2 inch deep or 1 inch deep for mid and late season crops. Space 2-3 inches apart. They grow rapidly and you can plant them among slower growing crops as they will be harvested before the other plants crowd them.
Varieties
Cherry Belle is the classic early round radish. it is not good for a later crop.
Easter Egg is an oval shape that comes in a variety of colors; red, white, purple, and pink.
Burpee White is globe shaped and white in color.
White Icicle are elongated like a carrot and white in color.
Location
Full sun to partial shade in loose, moist, but well-drained soil. Avoid soil that is rich in nitrogen as it will encourage leaf growth instead of root growth. Best pH is from 5.5 to 6.8
Fertilizer
Radishes are light feeders that need no fertilizer in a well composted soil.
Pests and Disease
Not many pests bother radishes, however row covers will prevent both flea beetles which chew tiny holes in the leaves and cabbage maggots that tunnel into the root and stem of the plant and will cause yellowing and wilting of the plant.
Harvest
Pull up entire plant and remove stems. The smaller the size the sweeter the radish.
Place radishes in a covered bowl or jar. In a small saucepan, combine the vinegar, water, ginger, garlic, oil and sugar; bring to a boil. Pour over radishes. Cover and refrigerate overnight or up to 1 week.
Mix cucumbers, onion, vinegar, sugar, salt and hot pepper sauce in large mixing bowl. Chill at least 3 hours or as long as overnight.
Mix well and drain off excess liquid. Add radishes and cilantro. Mix again and adjust seasoning.
Serve chilled.
