Denise's Birds and Blooms

Welcome to my Hummingbird Ranchette! I began working on this land in June 2004 as it was once part of a field and was cleared off to just bare ground. It is on the border of the Blackland Prairies and Post Oak Savannah, so I can use plants from both areas. We are just up the first rise from the Brazos Bottom in Burleson County. It is USDA Zone 8b. My house was delivered July 17, 2004 and it stuck out like a sore thumb. A vast majority of the plant species on this place were added by me, but the bermudagrass starting covering the front yard all on its own. It's been a continual effort to turn this bare patch into a nice garden. I have done a lot of work on this yard in a short time on a limited budget. I'm extremely happy to find a growing list of wildflowers in the yard.  I try to leave them if I can.  For most of the winter and spring, the yard has been covered in yellow evening primroses.  It looks more like a meadow than a manicured monoculture lawn.  The butterflies love it - and so do I.

I got the yard certified as a Backyard Wildlife Habitat #48098 and it is Gallery #40162 on the National Wildlife Federation's site. Their site has a listing of most of the native species and has a lot of good info about the plants/animals, including the sounds of the birds/animals. I have had several bird species visit and I have thrown out extra seed and corn on cold days and have been rewarded many times over by their presence. I have seen a coyote about 75' behind the house and we hear them many times at night. Several frogs have visited the tiny "ponds" in the yard.  Butterflies and dragonflies are flitting spots of color, but my all-time favorite visitors are the HUMMERS!

I got it certified as a Texas Wildscape on May 20, 2008. It is Habitat #4018.
