Echo Hill South's Neighboring Conservation Lands
The Town of Amherst has set aside substantial land in perpetuity
as conservation land. Three conservation land parcels are adjacent to the Echo Hill Area:
- The Wentworth Farm Conservation Area is across Route 9 from the EHSA. It is the target of
Joe Kunkel's Butterfly Walk which starts at his house on 74 Stony Hill Rd and wends its way around the main farm paths.
- Harkness Brook Conservation Area is a large tract of wooded
land that adjoins the EHS common land and includes the outlet
of our large pond. The swift running outlet stream from the pond
carves an impressive valley as it flows down to a swamp and meandering stream area in which trout have been caught on
occasion. The trails of this conservation area were established as the Eagle Project of Rick Tuthill, a resident of our Echo Hill South Community. The woods are populated with hemlock, white pine and
birch and swamp is repleat with skunk cabbage and marsh marigold
in spring and lady slipper by summer.
- On the North a woodland, stream and swamp area has a trail
head, marked Robert Frost Trail, on Stony Hill Rd
that leads one via delightful trails to nearby Amethyst Brook Conservation Area.
