Amherst Town Planning Board Meeting, Wednesday March 29, Amherst Town Hall A. Mr. Gates has been disingenuous about parking space needs.
Two EHSA members, have done surveys of the parking since the last meeting:
(1) Dated and timed survey:
Day Time Parking spaces ======== ===== ============== March 2 10:15 <10 spaces March 3 11:15 18 spaces (6 blocked with ice) March 16 9:45 <15 spaces March 21 9:22 32 spaces --------------------------------
(2) Timed survey:
On week-days with three times between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. and twice between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. The vacant spaces ranged between 22 and 28.
We feel that Mr. Gates, in wanting to push his project forward, has reported deceptive numbers which will come back to bite us in the EHSA when he requests the 35 or so extra parking spaces that he says he needs. We calculate based on his counts of 45 to 50 empty spaces as a rule plus his request for 7 more spaces that his real need will be for about 35 new spaces just on the basis of his conservative need for new spaces and his obvious undercount of currently available spaces.
B. Recent problems with local geology suggests caution with massive structures.
The Hampshire Fitness Center problems with their new building suggest caution in allowing any new building without a thorough understanding of the geology.
C. The need for more space by one of the tenants could be solved by another tenant finding better space somewhere else in Amherst.
None of the current tenants particularly serve the needs of the EHSA. The closing of the convenience store and the hairdresser have left that corner of our community sterile with respect to our needs. We would rather that the current tenants suffice with their current space and consolidate the space under fewer tenancies if any one tenant needs to grow. Planning Board could suggest new homes.Copy posted on the EHSA website URL: www.geocities.com/echohill_2000/
